You can just buy a lion tag over the counter as a resident.

From what i have heard is that they are proposing to open all the draw area up on Feb. 1st to quota. So that the quota gats filled in those area's.

I just talked to FWP in Missoula today, they said that was one of the proposals, but that IF it went through, it wouldn't go into affect until the following season (2012/13).

This topic hasnt been made offical yet. It will be going in front of the board on feb. 16th. It will still be a draw system untill the feb. 1st. After that it will be a open quota system, But if you apply for a tag you will not be able to purchase a tag over the counter for the feb 1st season. If you want this to go through i strongly suggest that you make a call to your Fish Wildlife commisioners in region 1 and 2.

I know the complaint of FWP is that they give out say... 20 tags for an area and only 6 cats are being killed. Well no kidding? When 14 of the tag holders don't own a dog and think that someone with dogs is just dying to have them come along and kill a cat over theirs.
How bout this? If they want to see 20 cats killed in a unit then give out 40 tags, but have a 20 cat quota? Then at least we won't have units being overrun with trucks and dog boxes on Feb 1 when an area hasn't reached a limit. Just a thought, it would at least make it easier for us hound guys to draw a tag, and I am thinking in a a couple more years these people without dogs will figure out to quit putting in for a tag that they have no chance of using.

For shit sake! When is the lion not going to be the scapegoat. The fwp is wanting to make a dent in predators start killing some damn wolves. We can manage the lion that has been proven! If there is over harvest in most of these areas there will be no lions in two years. There is not the food source for the lions to rebound. They do not reproduce like the wolf.First some say there is plenty of lions, then there are not seeing any then the permit. Now some say open it up again! Slow learners! Stay of the trigger let your kid run them with his own dogs!! I am not against shooting lions I am just against shooting every lion! I believe you have to manage not look at the easy way out. I am strongly against this new proposal. Good thing I have dogs that will run shortails also!! Because if this goes thru that is what we will have.

Thats a good idea Casey... at least I like that better than this "hybred" season everyone is talking about. I think that as long as the tags are going into the right hand that a better harvest is going to take place...... that being harvest of mature animals at least. My thoughts always were with the 100% percent quota system, or any quota at that, every one out to kill was going to kill the first cat that climbs wich was anything... including 40# sub adults. I think the population gets dinged without some selective hrvest, I guess my point being is what would happen to the deer if everyone goes out and shoots a fawn for a year or two.
Sorry, kind of off subject..........

Casey, I believe we are going to do this here region 1 and we may have a tom sub- quota, so say 20 cat quota and give out 40 tags with a male sub. quota. hopefully some of these tags go out to houndsmen, if it doesn't work in 2012-13 then I'd have to guess we''l either go 50/50 or go back to quota days.
