I got into a huge argument (in PMs) a while back with a guy that claimed to have taken alot of grey foxes and he said they had retracable claws like a bobcat. They do not! But since I had not taken any pictures of thier feet I could not prove it. So I just said lets agree to disagree so he would stop sending me PMs...

Anyhow I don't take many foxes since they are worth next to nothing got $5 a piece the last 6 I sold. Thats not worth the time it takes to skin, flesh and stretch em. My dogs caught one on the ground a few weeks ago and I took some pictures of the feet and finaly got them off my camera so Enjoy

Only 3 pictures per post so here is the last one. As you can see grey fox have dog like feet and toes.

tom some people are just ignorant. ive treed 100s of greys never seen a k9 with retractible claws yet. i was back east several years ago and a guy told me a fox cant climb after showing him several pictures he still wanted to argue

Greys and Reds both can climb, one better then the other but I've seen both up in a tree. Drive anywhere around farm country with haystacks and you'll see Reds up on top of them all the time. Here is a picture of a lions front foot that shows the area where the claws retract into. Never knew that the bone actually had an area for the claw to retract into unitl I got the wise idea to clean and whiten a front foot.

Dean, thats realy neat I can see how the bone is shaped to fit the claw.

About 40 years ago my dad caught a baby fox that we had for the summer while it grew up and learned to hunt, we let it run loose around the house and was pretty much raised with our barn cats, we took it to the vet for distemper shots and the vet told us that foxs can get both dog and cat distemper, this thing would run around the yard playing with the cats and could climb just as good as any of them.

gray fox have retractable claws, red fox don't. gray fox I believe are related to the kit fox. maybe that's were they get the retractable claws and ability to climb. Never seen a red fox tree. I've seen them climb a real slanted tree and which case, up the tree the dogs went too.jmo

Radar why would you post that after TomJr even had illustrations for us to look at. Dogs do not have retractable claws. I usually just read on here but sometimes I cannot help myself! Happy Thanksgiving Houndsmen!

Haven't you ever heard the old saying " My mind is made up so don't confuse me with the facts".

I read it and looked at the pics....but still I have my own opinion. Next time i'll just keep it to my self

Well, Radar, it seems that both you and Tom Jr. are right!

If you read the Heading on the PDF that John Porter posted, the Vermont Dept. of Fishand Game state that the Grey Fox has "Semi-retractable" toes.

The Post from Mr. Porter is a good read for all the Varmints listed.
