I had an old Black and Tan female that had some McDonald lineage on her one side. Is there anyone who knows some about this line? Is there any left around and what types of traits did they posses? Any help locating some of this line would be appreciated. Thanks.

Those are some excellent Black and Tan hounds. When I was first getting into hounds I went to his house and he had a yard full of them. I bought five pups from two litters and they were beautiful.
Out of those five I kept two but all of them started early and became excellent hounds. They would swim like a fish and move fast on the trail and would stay treed until you got there.
I worked for a horse trainer at the time breaking and riding horses . I would take them to work with me and hunt his ranch when I got off. I left them at his house when I went out of town for him and when I came back they were gone. I am pretty sure he stole and sold them. I quit the job that day and have not spoken with him since.
A few years ago I think I saw an ad where Mr. McDonald was selling some but when I went to see him he was already getting up in years so I am not sure if that was him.

I bought some dogs from John McDonald in the 70's. He was in Alba, Texas. At that time His old dog was "Rider Tom". The last time I was down there Rider Tom was going deaf and couldn't hear to honor the other hounds. We treed two or three coons and were headed back to the truck after a lengthy hunt, and Ole Tom treed four seperate lay-up coons while the other dogs were following John out.
This line of Black & Tan were sure enough tree dogs, and easy to handle. John was an outstanding hard hunter who could bring a story to life by mimicking about every dog's mouth he had ever owned.
I don't know of any of the bloodline now, but would be interested to know. John had a son who is probably still into hounds.
I'll be watching for info.

I have had a lot of Mcdonald dogs over the years and use to visit with John a lot and he was a wealth of information of the black and tan breed. Johns started his line of dogs by doing some select crosses on lines of Hans Wagner(Wagner Black and Tans) and later Col. Joe Bloodworth. Joe's dogs traced hard to the original Wagner black and tans as well. Many of today's more popular black and tanc oon dogs can still be traced back to the Night Rider lines. Bill Boatman famous for dog supplies also bred and sold many Wagner lineage black and tans for years.
