Anyone know of any besides the one coming up in Modesto in May? Never done a trial, what's it like?

I haven't been to a trial, but I went to a coon hunt that a new club in WA tried putting on. They want to get certified to do UKC comp hunts. Lots of guys and dogs but you could smell the BS from a mile away. They tried showing us up by talking down our grade dogs so it was hard not to poke fun and call people out, me and couple friends ended up leaving so we didn't get put in the pokey for bashing some heads. In the pre-hunt meeting they were talking about not shooting the coons they treed, I said, "Well what about bobcat?" They didn't think that was too funny.

If your into coon hunting and have good people skills it might be for you. Make sure the judges are honest and figure out if they have dogs in the trial.

Tough to think about getting the dogs out but theres a couple of field trials coming up but not in California,

Thanks for all the info, my question is how are these trials conducted? We release are hounds one at a time while they are on clock? I have never done any of this and would like to work specifically with my dogs before these events. Thanks!

Not sure how the Nevada guys do it but at the Oregon and Ca races you enter your dogs they draw them out into heat races with 8-12 dogs per race, the drag is about a mile or so long where they drag a coon scented drag over the same path every time before each race, the handlers all take the dogs to the start line of the race lead them out to let them smell it and so they know were the track is then line the up and the starter of the race starts the race, they follow the track to the tree where they have to come though the stakes where the line judges are about 150 ft from the tree and 125 ft apart 1st dog though is 1st line and the second is 2nd line then once they are at the tree where the coon (stuffed coon in the B.S. state of Ca.) is hung in a cage the 1st dog to bark at the coon is 1st tree and the 2nd is 2nd tree, these 4 places from each race then moves on to the finales where they all run another track like the 1st and are placed the same at the heat races, that about all there is to them if you go to the Modesto race you will understand it better

I suggest talking (or letters, e-mail ect.) to the local and state politicians and remember they work for you. If you represent a substantial group of people, they will pay attention. The contact info can usually be found on their websites. Don't give up!

That's too bad, I wish I had met you. I was there last year, blue toyota tacoma with a black dogbox parked along the main road who had blueticks, younger guy.
