Cutting Carpal Pads

I know I've heard of the guys in Utah and Southwest cutting the carpal pads (the pads high up on the ankle) off their pups when they do dew claws, have any of you guys that run on crusty snow out west done this? I may be having a litter and in June and I'm thinking about trying this since that's about the only place on my dogs feet that get tore up and anything I can do to keep my dogs from being layed up, I'm willing to try. I know it's been discussed before, but can't find any discussions on how to go about it...anyone with experience can you give me some advise? Thanks

Newby, we cut all of our pups that way. You can cut them off with a pair of small scissors when you do the dew claws. Just cut them level, they will grow back but not stick out to hang up on things.

Good luck with your litter, jason

Thanks Jason,

So you just cut them level with the back of the foot at what about 2-3 day? What about bleeding? Do you have to dress them to keep it from getting infection? Appreciate the help. Darin
