Im assuming this is the right place for this topic. I know all of you guys arent just houndsmen or hunters, but outdoorsmen. Do you guys pick up a lot of sheds? I was just curious, post all of the pictures you have. We have a "season" now for picking up sheds in Wy, been in place for a little while so now on the rare occasion i run across one chances are i cant legally pick it up. Anyways, lets see some pictures!

Well sir I am now a retired shed antler gatherer. Sheds use to be a good portion of my income but it has become so popular now it just isn't any fun anymore. I find as many gatorade bottles and vienna wiener cans as I do sheds. I wish they would go to a season here and make it illegal for out of staters to pick them up. Anyhow I'll see if I can scrape up some pictures.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! a shed season. are you really saying you have to pay for a permit, and only have a limited amount off time to look for sheds? if so i guess there there is absolutely no shame as to the level that our government will go to pick the pockets of the people of this country.

We are very fortunate to have many places around us where shed hunting is pretty good, but like you guys said becoming more and more popular everyday. So we find ourselves going farther and farther into the woods. These pictures are just some of the better pics from last year and this year ( so far). Still out looking every chance we get.

whats next a scouting season?

I dont believe we have to pay for a permit, i think its just a season thing, but ive heard of people getting slammed with poaching for picking up an "out of season" shed. Could be false but i wouldnt put it past G&F. If they do require people to buy permits.....then i havent touched anything...

is that your shed dog treetalkin ? i was reading an artical somewhere bout training shed dogs was pretty interesting sounds like fun .

Yes, she is still in training. She is only eight months. She is coming along nice. She hasn't found one all on her own yet, but I have seen a few about 50 yards away and I will circle it until she sniffs it out. I also make her pick up and smell every horn I find. Training is similar to drags for hounds except you don't drag the horn just put scent on it and hide it. But just like hounds the best training is out in the field.

good thing I made it out to some of your areas before you or I might not of found any!!!!! Shine is looking good better load up the horse and hit the front.

As far as a season in Wyoming goes it went that way more for protection of wildlife. Like here in Montana, Wyoming has hard winters and alot of times the antlers are dropping while there is still a pile of snow on the ground. Shed hunters go in and disturbed the wintering grounds and create a alot of stress on the animals sometimes leading to death. I don't agree that the gov should be involved but unfortunately we have some real morons amongst us who don't respect anything or anyone. I am not an active shed hunter just pick them up while out with the hounds or scouting.

Treetalkin, we have had two labs and i believe ya can train them to do any thing. super, super smart. if we get another one i think i might try to train it right from a young age to look for the sheds. good luck with yours.


Tman i know what ya mean about the idiots. here when they start droping the ones that are still carying their horns, they chase them into the brush hoping the brush will knock them off. . oh well i guess you will see anything when there is a buck involved. take care!

As far as people going in early and disturbing areas. Montana has a law on its game ranges that won't allow you on till may 15th at noon. This creates a rat race and it's pretty crazy at the bigger game ranges, but at some of the smaller ones it's not too bad. I think it's a good thing for the elk. Unfortunatly

Sorry I pressed the wrong button. I was starting to say Unfortunatly people still sneak on early and disturb the elk, but fwp has been trying to cut it down. So we will see what happens.

Like they said previously its because people will "herd" the deer around on snowmachines and what not to stress em out and force them to drop. Theoretically this should also make shed hunting here a little more on the fair side but it hasnt helped me out at all In wyoming it only applies to my side of the Continental Divide i believe and its closed from Jan 1 to Apr 30. I would say id pick up a shed dog but i have WAY too many dogs to begin with

Those are awesome when i was little i use to find more sheds when i was hiking with my dad, now i'm lucky to see an old chewed up one. Great job keep looking
