Hey guys I just picked up a 4 1/2 month old walker today that is very very skinny. I plan on taking him to my friend thats a vet to have him checked out and see if there is a weight gainer i can get him on as im super excited for this dog. His big issue is he gets car sick and pukes his food all up. id like him to be able to ride in the truck without puking but if it might be the cause of his weight im ok with not taking him out for awhile. For instance if i have to let him get over the car sick issue and it takes 6-7 months is that to late to get him working on cats? that would make him around 11 months to a year before i could start taking him out with me. Id really appreciate some advice from seasoned houndsmen. thanks again.

Brian,
Your pup might be wormy, have your vet friend check for worms.
As for the pup getting car sick, don't worry about that. Lots of pups get sick when they are first introduced to hauling. Just keep hauling him and you don't have to wait till he gets over this before you start hunting him. He'll hunt better on an empty belly anyway.

I have found that spending time around and in the dog box helps a lot. Sometimes it's 'nerves'' not motion that makes them sick. Make the box a familiar and pleasant place. Leave him in the box some when at home....... short periods at first. Heck, I have even let them use the box for their house for a day or two. Main thing is help him get accustomed to it and accept it as a "good" place.

I would consider changing your dog food as well. I wouldn't start hunting him hard, but take him for truck rides, woods walks, few drags couldn't hurt. Like the last guy said, keep that pup in the box alot to make him feel like its home or safe.

Canned dog food puts weight back on quick. If he is throwing up alot he could also be dehydrated. I will give mine a piece of hamberger or something that is salted liberally to get them to drink and retain water. Good luck!
