Trade two of your younger dogs in on one good older dog. Then give that one pup all of your time and attention. Being new and trying to train three pups is an awful big mountain to climb.

X2 what full cry hounds said, the best trainer for your pups is a older hound that chases exactly what you want it to. Spending a grand +/- for a trainer is well worth the investment, a year from now you will have that much in your pups if not more and might not have any hunters in the group of 3.

Very good advise given. Three pups is the wrong way to get into hounds take one and focus on it and it only! Andy

That's great advice given. There's a lot of guys who have been hunting many years who will tell you that raising 3 pups is an absolute handful and you will end up better in the long run by giving the right pup enough attention and getting a finished hound to run him with.

I would keep all three and at least start them to see which one has the heart and drive to make you a good dog. If you sell or trade off two you may not get the best one of the three. Odds are only one of the three will make a top shelf type dog that is worth hunting

azhunter, its great you are wanting to get started into the hound world but ask your self why do I need 3 pups to start out with rather than just one, and if you can truely give yourself a straight answer then go for it but you will more than likely be in for some major head aches and work and not to much success. jmo. Keep one pup and buy a made dog. The best thing to do is find a seasoned houndsmen that will let you tag along. There is alot more to it than just good dogs. As far as the dogs go, there are alot of decent dogs here for sale. Times are tough. People need money. Make sure you hunt with it before you buy it. If have any questions hit me up. Im always lookin for someone to hunt with also.

I might ad one more thought, even if you get all your pups started it will be a year minimum before they will start catching you game and more like two or three. And nothing is more frusterating than being a begining houndsmen spending alot of money and time and not beable to catch game on a regular basis. If you get a older solid hound you can start hunting right away and chances are that old dog will teach you alot about hunting with hounds that will help you in your journey with a pup, and what you learn from an older dog will make alot of thing make more sense with hunting hounds rather than chasing three young dogs playing through the woods chasing anything they can. Like said above its nice that you are wanting to hunt hounds, dont let any of these comments set you back you might just give it some more thought it will be alot more enjoyable to hunt an older dog catch game and watch one good pup grow into a nice productive hound. goo luck

These are all great tips !!! But i can tell you that even a season hound hunter has a hard time with 3 pups.It can be done because i have done it and it is a pain in the ass even with a good pup trainer. Allot of people don't tell you but pups have a short attention span and love to play grab ass anytime they can .This can cause a pup that is doing real good to pull off races and not make trees that they would have if you did not have so many pups!! You are better off taking one pup and putting all your time into it with another finished dog. You will have allot better results in training your dog than pick up another and start it with the other two. Before you know it you have 3 Really good dogs.Just remember it takes allot of hard work to make a real good dog and just a second for allot of puppies to screw one up!!! so keep that in mind when you are training a pup .If one trashes chances are the rest will to and it is hard to break a dog that has never caught the right game in the first place!!! Hope this helps !!! Jason

When I first started hound hunting I got two pups. Everyone told me I was stupid and it would never work, but I had a plan. In Idaho you can bait, so I went and set two baits and when they started getting hit I went to sit them and took the pups along. We'd get there in the early morning grey and wait for a bear to show up. It was tough getting two six month old pups to sit still for any period of time, but it taught them discipline. One morning a cranky old red sow came to eat my cookies and grease, and I cut those two pups loose. They bayed her for a minute and then she went psycho on them and ran off. They followed her from a distance, baying the whole way and we did that for 9 hours until the dogs got tired and came back. The next bear was a young boar and they dove in and fought him for a minute and then treed 20 yards from the bait. I was beside myself, my dogs treed a bear! Those two pups were in the top ten best bear dogs that I have ever owned. If you want to bad enough you can turn those pups into hounds. Yes, the odds are a little longer in your situation, but no one ever accomplished anything worthwhile by letting everyone else tell them it couldn't be done.

i agree with you i know it can be done with time and tips from people that know wat there doing. i have two good pups and it will aall work out with time. everyone is saying it cant be done but i plan on running them with others for a couple years till they catch on. im more into the enjoyment than catching something everytime every tree. thanks again though i apreciate it

you guys are on the right track about not starting out with 3 pups, but that's how I started and thats how I saw the 3 best dogs I have ever ran behind. I was catching lions with them at 6 mo. and by 1.5 they were as solid as any dog I have ran since. something about learning it for themself rather than just following older dogs that makes them just a little better. hell of a lot of work though. I treed my first lion and had to call my dogs to the tree and show it to them. that is the ones that weren't chasing elk.

but from that day forward they always beat me to the tree.
