Two hunters meet up on the mtn. by chance and they both are cat hunten and both real proud of the 2 dogs each owns . They get out of their hunten riggs and look both over and exclaim on the comparisones between the two trucks,dog boxws and truck tires and then look at each others 4 hounds .
The one hunter with two fine looken Walkers proudly stands each like hes benchen em for this other hunter too view , and too him or any one else they look prety dang good looken and colored up real lively in markens.
The other guy drags out this pair of 37 lb gyp off colored mixxed colored funny looken hounds with coke-bottle heads an bugeyed poped-out eyes, kind of black and tan looking but high tanned legged an faced. their ears is pretty short to .They look all around and arn`t leashed yet and are so wound up they are runen round his truck,up and over the hood and back-end of the dog box and he calmly says/ HEY ! They both skid to a hault befor his feetwhich leaves the other hunter too say boy they are live wires but mind real well ! Yep says the ole hillbily.
The city slicker driven the brand new dodge ram 2500 (4x4) crew cab pickup says does your 2 hounds rigg ? Naw said the ol hillbilly, I just toss em out infront and let em road me a strike . So the city hunter says old BUTCH & RANGER here they are good rig dogs and why don`t werun on together its aug. and though its middnite hell its got to still be 90 degrees out ! The hillbilly said sure sounds good, so he follows behind in his old station waggon and watches the 2 walkers tied up on the other trucks rig top box .and they go about 45 minutes and narrley a bark . so the ole hillbilly flashes his headlights atthe truck infront of him and they stop and talk, bottem line being he feels the just passed through some real good hunten and he said if a man has a strike dog on cat by gosh he should beable too run one back through there !?
The city hunter said well maybe they arn`t moven yet? The hillbilly said whats that mater a guy should be able to startonback there day or night , he adds grant ya its just too hot out in aug. too run in the later mornings and reall is too hard on the dogs, but its not goen too get much cooler tonight maybe another 15 degreese cooler by 4 am hopefully . So they agree to drive back down and then turn around and let the hillbillys 2 gyps road hunt up the grade they have allready riged over with the 2 male walkers .
The 2 gyps are quick and yet pacen them selves and covering a streight up the dirt rd. lite gate, smelling of stones,and an occassional small boulder along the road way edge . The dogs wind and both trow their heads up in the air and strike with a high squeelen horn mouthes and the 2 trucks stop and the dogs are by a bolder and sniffen some cat droppens on the rock and the other guy has bailed out and tailgated RANGER & BUTCH and they come out and dance around and winden and they hear Lady an Sue open again and now the 2 gyps are over the bank of the road and headed down hill into a creek which lays maybe 150 ft. futher down the draw . So the two walkers arnt buyen it and look around an the 2 gyps are pieceing out a cold or hard trail along the creek bed area.
Now then the city hunter walkes over and examens the cat dung left on the rock closely testing it with a stick, he deduces its made around late afternoon maybe 9 pm. He said what are your 2 hounds rujnning cause its not that cat dropeings hell its 1:45 am and its aug. and was left between 7-9 pm here !He said in this heat, no wind I think your 2 dogs is hooked up on something else. The hillbilly says well I cant smell it myself but they sound pretty good hooked up on it now . The city hunter said will they work coon ? Ya says the hillbilly in reply. The city hunter saidcI got streight cat dogs they run nothen but cat .
Well said the hillbilly, ya better get em in there befor the 2 gyps of mine get it warmed up and gone . The city hunter said I can see they can hard track buddie,but that no cat or my 2 walkers wouldn`t be standing around on the road ! The hillbilly says suit your self friend .Now the city hunter is pretty much a nice guy so he takes off down too the creek and his 2 dogs head off down their too and disapear, in the dark, just his belt lite beam can be seen. The 2 gyps are now up on the next hill and starten to really talk and walk .The hillbilly sees the flashlight shineing the sandy dry bottem of the stream bed and following tracks he reconds/then hears the city huntercallen for his 2 walkers too hunt and look-em-up !
The 2 gyps are toped over the next ridge and trailed outof hearing and still no barks yet from the 2 walkers/ with in 20 minutes the city hunter is back too the hunten rigs and has both walkers leashed and he puts them up in the box . He says wed better drive around and cut your 2 gyps off cause that a cold hard track and I see it is a nice sized bobcat , but way too early left track,man it will be plum too the big river down in the big canyon befor they get up on him !?
So they drive back around take another off shoot rd and go about 180 degrees 1/2 circle and pull up on a point . they get out of their rigs and listen, nothen . And the hillbilly gets his tracker out and it souns off and tree switch is goen on it .The calculate the dogs are maybe 1/2 a mile down in the canyon but the way the tracker is acting strangely it could be a cave !? So off theycdepart down this deer trail and cut a deff loggen spurr trail and sizz sagg snakeing down the hill and now that there closer they can hear the 2 hounds muffelled voiced catch mouthed calls.
It don`t take much longer and their standing on the levy banks of the dry river beds and the dogs are bayed up thightly in a whole in the lower bank and they can hear the cat snarrel and growllen also. The city hunter is reall excited and pleased and between the 2 hunters they extradite the 2 gyps and have em leashed back.
Its 3:16 am and the2 hunters and 2 gyp hounds are standing back at the rigs now and hot and dry and glad this one is in the books . The city hunter says man for summer time that was some piece of cold trailen dude , ya got some fine cat dogs/ he said my 2 hounds didn`t even offer to goon ititwas plum out of their leagues ! He adds what kind of hounds are them ? The hunter says I`ve had this stran 30 yrs but crossed in and locked in some Mathes dog too em and sothe color changed some, but the same hound I`ve been hunten all long.
The city hunter said I might will try one of them mathes dogs myself after tonight ! The hillbilly said why do that,shoot therse them little topper again dogs does the same thing in the walker dogs, shoot says the hillbilly, thers all breeds that got a line in em that is got an extra goo darn nose & brains !The city hunter said well its sure worth my cheken em out then / hey he adds thanks for the good hunt tonight ! So goes the story of the COLD NOISED TRACK DOG from lesser nose power good cat dog !

Sorry Hard Hittin, I guess I am not answering your question, but I know some good folks will.

The coldest nosed bobcat dog I ever had, I didn't even know she had a cold nose at all until she was almost 2. Still a little puzzled at how I did not figure that out any earlier. I think she grew into her nose with use and practice.

How did I determine it was a cold nose? Well, first of all, by comparison to the other dogs we were using. She just kept distinguishing herself above and beyond the other dogs in the tracks she could take and get the cat jumped. Second, when a person is hunting the same area, and there is snow, you can begin to age the tracks acording to the way they look, are they frozen in the bottom, when the last snow fell, and what you saw the day befor or two days befor, etc., etc.

Some of the same principles can apply to dirt and mud. I know of a situation where a good Leopard cur dog was taking a bear track that was full of water and the last time it rained was over 24 hours ago, etc.

Sometimes in looking for tracks we would see a track and pass it up for size reasons (by passing up the smaller tracks, you will help your cat population). But then after looking 15 hours or whatever, you come back to it because it is the only track in the county. Well, you know it is at least 15 hours old, etc.

If you are releasing game, as you wait longer and longer befor letting your dog run it, a young dog might distinguish itself as being colder nosed than the other dogs. But again, in some dogs this ability wont really show up till later.

Everret Manor, a government hunter beleived strongly that very few hounds ever are allowed or "taught" to use their nose to their full potential. He would take a dog that was thought to have a medium nose, or what ever, and after he had it for a couple years it was a bona fide
cold nosed dog.

This is such a huge discussion, and there is so much theory around it, that I am sure others will add to and subtract from this.

I tried touching its nose but my fingers must not be sensetive enough. Did you say to lick it next. OK I always said I would do whatever it took to have some good dogs.

Lol, Snowy, if you try your tongue and still cant tell, here's what you do: put the shock collar on him, put your tongue on his nose, and push the button. If you dont feel any thing at that point, either you got a super cold nosed dog, or you might need to call 911.

It won't work with just the collar on and your tongue on his nose you also have to reach around and complete the circiut if you know what I mean.

If his nose lights up red he is hot nosed if his nose lights up blue he is cold nosed then go wash your fingeres and try it on your ole lady

I think we are gonna get this figured out sooner or latter.

My ole lady is definately cold nosed

Thomas, I figure your old lady would turn your nose blue alright, but it would NOT be from "completing the circuit"!
