I was visiting with a gentleman over the weekend, and we talked about everything. Damn near solved the worlds problems! Anyways we got to talking about stuff that could kill a dog in a hurry. He brought up raw fish, I did not know this and was greatly surprised. I was curious if anyone else had anything to add to this subject.

I read an article on feeding dogs raw, as if they were still wolves and it said fish was fine, so did a couple other sites but idk?

Been through it with my house dog someone threw it out in the woods by our house she got into it dropped 20 lbs in the matter of days took her in and got her fixed up but its incredibly rare for them to get it twice the vet tech said when she gets a new pup she feeds it to her then waits ten days and takes it in so she never has to worry about it again

The fish type indeed was salmon. That's a tidbit I just didn't know about. Thanks for the replies.

Tetracycline, can be bought at fish stores. fish cycline is tetracycline used to control bacterial infections in fish tanks. Most state laws prohibit the sale of tetracycline for dog use, but allow it for fish tanks. Its the same thing. Nite lite also sells it as fish cycline, that way it can be shipped. Buy a bottle and treat the dog yourself, saving money for more important things. Like hunting. Have a nice day. John.

Not that it affects me, but is that just a west coast thing or would the east coast salmon carry it as well?

I'm not sure if its just a west coast thing or not but I do know they feed it to there dogs in Alaska something about the fish being fresher and not having the same bacteria

Actually its a west coast thing and its in our salmons blood, its an organism that is called fluke. I found out all about it the hard way, had 2 dogs with it and they were prolly hours from dying. They started out not eating then got lethargic and wouldn't move. A good old buddy of mine asked if they have been around fish and I was like i don't know they treed some coons. I smelt one of the leather collars on one of my dogs and it stank like fish. So i went to the vet and we had to put an IV in one dog then you can use tetracycleing to kill the fluke and then use an IV with dewormer so it gets rid of it a lot faster, and the flukes can live for up to 12 days before showing any affects. I was on day 11 when both dogs showed signs of it. It took about 4 days and both dogs were hunting again.

We use sulfur for salmon in our dogs. There are two types of salmon poisoning. Apparently the Elochomin river salmon is different then the other salmon in our rivers. Had one hound that got it twice. Thats when our vet told us about the two strains.
