They cats around here run into holes , not very many trees alot of sagebrush and dryied up creek bottom through winter months.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the bobcats out of there holes. please no stupid remarkers, just simply asking a question I do not know. Any information would be helpful.

I have a new little russel shorty. Kinda got her for a truck cab companion thinking she might help with culverts and holes. Not sure if a russel will come out ahead on a bobcat in a hole or not. It'll be next year before I can tell you how it goes. Anyone else have any experience they can share?

Are these rock holes such as crevices? Most hounds will try and drag a cat out if its possible . The other issue is if these cats are a long ways in your going to have issues for most any dog small enough to fit being able to drag it out . I guess to clarify my thought bobcats will choose to run if its a option but don't like to turn their back if they're bayed and can't make a clean break

These are holes in the cut banks of a creek bottom. Sure dont wana get a dog in a nasty pickle in a hole such as a russell or terrier if I can help it. Just alot of bobcat out here on the ranch. MAYBE 20 trees on 25,000 acres . Alot of sage and rolling hills and rough drawes. Tons and Tons of Cotton Tail and Jack Rabbits. So personally I thaught perfect bobcat habitat. So instead of driving 2 hours to the hills I would hunt my own place. Problem at hand is HOLES. They start the track , jump the cat, and end up at a hole, and go home empty handed. Just worried if you keep coming home empty will a dog who cant catch a bit a fur in there mouth will slowly loose interested in the race or hunt period.

Get a catch pole and see if you cant drag em out.

You don't need kills to make good dogs. I know guys who only take photos of game they catch. When I hide hunt for bobcats, my dogs do not get to chew the cat because this makes more work for me at the shed. I would think having a catch pole handy would help.

a pick and a shovel turn a little hole into a big hole that a dog can fit in.

i have a beagle that i train my puppies with that tags along sometimes. we send him in holes and culverts and tight places where the hounds dont fit. he loves the hell out of it!

there is certianly tricks and tactics we all have tried to get the darn stubbies out of holes, in my opinion if you have that many holes you might wanna look for some really tight mouthed dogs. i had one which came from jeff allens lines and he caught cats in the eastern oregon country which is all rim rock and sage brush. he would only open when he could see the cat. i sure wish i would of relized just how much he really helped on cattching those cats in the open country cause i would of never sold him. also dont over look the weiner dog we used to use one to flush cats out of holes there a mean lil dog i just cant stand them they never shut the hell up at home. but i have a couple more ways of getting them out also will pm you my number you can give a call and i will pass on a couple of my tricks good luck

Just my opinion & hope it helps you. The best hole dog to me is one that stands out side the hole & barks steady. A friend told me last night about running a cat in a hole. One of his best dogs went in the hole got ate up. 339.00 VET BILL & the vet says no hunting for two to three weeks Worst yet have known dogs to get trapped in those holes. ThAT CAN BE A REAL ORDEAL. Here something. You might try a doubled piece of barb wire. Run it through a piece of inch and a half PVC pipe ( to keep from getting chewed up when you pull the cat out) run the wire down the hole , make you a crank handle near the pipe and twist the wire up in the cats fur and hide , then pull it up keeping the pipe between you and the cat. We used this method on holed up critters when I was a kid. We didn't have the pvc pipe then but speaking from experience. You had best use it or the equivalent as he ain't gonna be happy when he comes out.LOL

My best advice is to work towards dogs that don't give the cat time to get to the hole. I know in my career of cat hunting when I had real cat dogs I didn't put them in holes regardless of the country I hunted, they either treed or bayed up. Just my observation.

If your gonna send a dog in the hole it has to be a dog thats breed to go in a hole and know how to work whatever is in there without getting tore up and either making it break from an escape hole or you gotta dig to it. A beagle, hound, curr, airdale any of these dogs will NOT work. Some people may have that one special dog that may be one of these breeds that can do it. But thats a 1 out of 1000. Jack Russell, Jagd, Patterdale are breed and have been breed for 100yrs to get anything and everything out of a dirt hole. I hunt Jack's only, they will tree or go to ground. Not much nose to hunt at night but if your hounds put it in a hole then it dont need a nose anyway. One thing to keep in mind if your gonna hunt dirt holes. Everything above ground amplifies underground. So your underground dog cant work game correctly underground if there is to much noise and distractions going on above ground. The smaller the dog you get to go to earth the better off you are and he is. He will be able to move easier in the hole and dig less.
