What frequency is too close for garmin

So I have read all available info in this subject that I could find. My question is this. What frequency is too close to the frequency that the garmin uses. So if I use 144 or 145 will that be far enough away not to cause damage? If so will it still be far enough away if mobile power is over say 15 watts our hand helds are 5.5. Will they damage the unit? Dont want to beat a subject to death but don't want a dead box either. Cat season is two weeks away. Thanks all
