I recently come acrossed an outfit, that claimed to have success Riggin lion. Just as you can rig for bear?
Sounds like a wisetail to me.
What's your thoughts?

Unless maybe your stars align perfectly. Got the right cold nosed dog, right temps, right moisture, fresh track(as in, run acrossed the road right in front of you) and so on.

5 years ago it was absolutely unheard of other than Ike. Now a days everywhere you look people are claiming to do it. I think it can be done but with out any consistency unless you have an awesome road system and or high cat populations. Dogs can do amazing things and saying a dog cant smell a hot track from 6' away but then turn around and say a dog trails and catches a 3 day old track seems silly to me. I have also heard guys say it couldnt be done but then say they hunt the tops of rims in the mornings because if a lion crossed below the rim the dogs would wind the track from the top. That sounds pretty close to riggin to me. Never say anything is impossible.

It does'nt matter if a dog is riggn scratches,piss posts,or turds there is a track that leads up to it and one that leads away from it. It may be 2 minutes old or 2 weeks old or anywhere in between. At least at that point you know a cat has been there. Then i guess you find out how good of trail dogs you have. If they cant trail it at least you have a spot to check on later, if they can trail it you have a cat you wouldnt have caught without a rig dog. I have seen dogs do some amazing things off the box. Some i have owned and others i didnt. Never say never

I have had dogs do it just havent had any do it consistantly.

This actually can happen. Randy Cooper rigged a lion once with a client.
And that dog was not red and from Utah.
But they did come out of his truck like a rolling ball of fury.

I feel they can rig a bobcat better off the rig than they can smell them on the ground. As far as lion, they surly smell stronger than a bobcat. I have seen them rig in the desert in July in dry conditions several a day [bobcat]. Ask Jeff or Cory they were there and from your country. Dewey

I have treed several by striking out of the box also with the same dogs seen one cross the road in front of me and didn't strike it until I stopped and set on the track several minutes while getting my collars turned on. There are always guys out there saying they are striking cats but never turn loose without a track. I don't consider dogs strike dogs unless they strike and you turn loose and catch it without a track.

Is that because a animals body releases the scent and it takes a minute or so for the scent to settle? I had an old timer tell me that's why you want to wait and let a bear or other animal run for a few minutes to let scent settle before you run it. I have seen a dog strike a lion here in California while bear hunting, the bear dogs we were hunting wouldn't make a noise so we looked and looked for tracks and found a lion track. Up the top of the bank 20 yards in the snow.

Yes I have also heard the theory about the scent settling. I once watched a bear wandering around on a road for a couple minutes pulled and couldn't strike it. I drove back & forth over the track several times and they still wouldn't strike. Turned on it and it treed after a 3 mile race, loaded up the dogs and crossed the track again on the way out where the bear had crossed a road a mile into the race and the box blew up. I thought the whole thing kinda strange.
