got hounds home from a successful lion hunt today and went to unload the dogs and one of my best 5 yr old was dead in the box!?!? No dog fights, lion slaps, tree fall outs or anything i can figure. She had her tounge bitten down on and her lip on left side was also bitten down on very tightly. Any ideas would help me so much right now???????

heart attack or stroke at such an early age? this dog was in prime shape. she was on a lion race and tree today and hunted awesome but she was not herself today at the tree or in the box she was kinda being nasty and grouchy when she is normally very loving and laid back

is it the lips/tongue thing that makes yall think that or the red eyes? im trying to put some kind of closure to this. could the other dogs have killed her without me hearing it??? I know she was being kind of a sh*t head towards the other dogs early in the day but i didnt hear anything that sounded like a dog fight and my dogs normally never ever fight

No way of knowing for sure.About all anyone can do is guess without an autopsy.The fact that she was abnormally cranky makes me think she was not feeling well.Maybe in pain.I've had 2 dogs die from ruptured diaphragms.One was caused by cancer and the other unknown.Both dogs seemed perfectly fine up until a few hours for they died.First symptom was rapid breathing and the second was obvious discomfort.Many different possibilities.Sorry about your dog Levi.

Sounds like a seizure. I have one who seizes a lot and I have done a TON of research on it. Very common throughout the country in blue tics and line breeding promotes epilepsy. I had no idea that mine had been having seizures until we started bringing him inside at night. Has a seizure after almost every race and I now give him pills after a hunt to prevent them. I figure most people with hounds don't know if they have seizures because they are outside. 100% of his non-hunting related seizures happen between 2 and 4 am and usually happen about once/month. Despite his seizures he is a great dog. Sorry to hear that your dog died.

Does poison get used anywhere near where you hunt? Or at home could she have got to some?

You should be able to rule out a dog fight by looking for bite wounds. There would be at least some marks on the neck area and likely blood and fur tufts pulled out ect. But a real dog fight is usually very noisy, even if none of the dogs die...

Siesure, stroke, poison. All good possibilities. Without a necropsy, you'll never know for sure. Doesn't sound like a dog fight to me. Back in the 80's, I owned two close line breed, actually inbred, dogs and they both had siesures on regular intervals and both ended up dieing an early death. I've stayed away from that close inbreeding and linebreeding and believe I have much healthier dogs for it.

Hounds can have every type of deffect that Man has. Anorisms(sp), Heart Attacks, Strokes, etc. As Dean said without an Autopsy it will be touch to know for sure.....chalk it up to "S--T Happens", with Hounds we generally do not know more than we know.

Glen Rybard, one of Dad's associates was cleaning pens last year. He had just looked at and spoken to Crowe (a 6+ yearold). A half hour or so later, as he finished, he looked over at Crowe, say him stretched out enjoying the sun. He walked over and saw that he was dead...yet just minutes before seemed fine, in NO distress....but now he was peacefully gone!

Now Dean our experience with Line/In breeding is much different than yours. Few Hounds are as closely bred as Dad's, yet Poor Health or not being Hardy is NOT something we have to deal with. These can stand up to weeks of daily hunting with multi Race days not uncommon. While Dad retires Hounds out of his pack at 7 to 8 years of age, I know of 1-14 yr old and 2-13 year olds and several 10 year olds still giving good service to the people who are hunting them!

I would also say seizure due to her biteing her tounge and cheek. It is possible it was it was brought on by an embolism from a hit to the head sometime previouse.
