Having a problem a male I have all the sudden acts like he doesn't want to hunt the last I don't know maybe 4 or 5 races he wouldn't leave the road I even tried turning him in during the races still wouldn't go I even tried turning him into the tree and wouldn't go only would fallow me in to the tree! What is going on he is usually is in from start to finish if not starting track only thing that has changed is I got another dog that I added to my pack that has kinda takin his spot but I still don't see why the drastic change in the dog and it wasn't over time just all the sudden wouldn't leave the road I don't get it and I'm about out of patience this is unacceptable! Any ideas?

If he has been doing his job I would look at the other dog.
Is he growley, Has there been any tree fights that you know of.
Try hunting him alone. I had a dog get stretched by two of my buddys dogs under tree.
He never would pack up and run With other dogs. but did fine among members of my own pack.

Brandon is the new dog you have added to your pack the Chase hound you & I have exchanged information about. If that is the case can tell you he was very reliable to start cat only when I owned him. As I told you he was not a good tree dog, most always did a good job tracking & have seen him do a very good job on cats that were caught on the ground. I have hunted him in a 10 dog pack being aggressive or fighting other dogs was never an issue even with a ground catch. Chase was let out of his kennel to run and play with other dogs each day and get his treats from the wife without any fighting. However do not try to give him a beating as he will not allow it, he will defend himself from man or dog. Chase has been gone from my place since early fall and I was told went out on trail to at least one other hunter before you. It has been my experience some very straight hounds will soon develope bad habits & run off game if hunted with dogs that run off game. Do not know if that has happened and sure hope not. Know you have told me you are running him on Grey fox and he is treeing pretty good and doing real well on track. As Andy and Old man advised I would be paying close attention to interactions between chase and that male that refuses to go. Could it be you have shocked that male when you thought he was running off game? Does that male have health issues? Is chase now running off game????? This hound hunting can be a real challenge and some times we have to learn thru experience no mattter how much one reads. I can think of three hunters who have spent time in the brush with Chase and seen the things I have told you. AL

Leave the new hound home a couple of times and see if your dog turns it around, if it does you will know what the problem is.JMO

Did you discipline the dog recently for anything? Other than that I would do as advised eariler.

Dont forget to check his health. For some reason he does not "feel like" going. Make sure his sight and hearing etc. etc. are all as they should be and have been. Could be internal also. I had a new dog doing strange things for quite awhile before I figured out he could not see.

Yes al chase is the new dog added to my pack and chase gets along really well with my other dogs I have never seen chase get aggressive with my other dogs except with my female one time at the tree when she snapped at him other than that no issues what so ever and the dog that won't leave the road hasn't been shocked in well I Kant remember the last time I shocked him and no trash issues recently always end up with good game treed I have noticed before that the dog acts different if I hunt with other people and there dogs it seems like he just doesn't like a lot of dogs around unless he's real familiar with the dogs he hunts with but has never not ran the race I'm not sure exactly what his issue is I suppose it could be a health issue but he eats drinks normal. Chase the new dog is working out really good and is all around a better hound for what I nead but the other dog has his places were he contributes to the pack but I have also noticed he does really good when he starts the track but not quite as good if other dogs start the track what do you do with a dog like that?

Brandon. When I have an issue with a dog and cant seem to find a quick solution, I lay that dog up. It goes against how I used to think, but I have ruined many dogs pushing them to hard thinking I could hunt or train the problem out of them. A few weeks on a chain watching their buddies get unclipped to go, can sure make him forget about all the bad. It also gives you time to ponder the mess. You wont make a superstar in a few weeks, but you sure can ruin 1. Hope this helps. John.

Well I tried leaving him in the box several times then last night I tried hunting he will strike but still won't run I put him and another dog down they got the track started I turned the other dogs in about the time they got in justbelow the road he came back and stood on the road wyning staring in to the trees listening to the other dogs run the track I tried getting him to go for a couple mins then got pissed put him in the box and left him there wile I hiked to the tree so now I'm convinced he has an issue with the new dogs I know he's a decent dog and has done good for me but if he won't hunt for me no point in having him my issue is what to do with him try to see if I can get rid of him, letting him out on trial knowing that someone spending there hard earned gas money to pick him up has a 50 50 chance that he will either A hunt good for them or B won't hunt with there dogs at all?? I don't want to end him so this is we're I'm stuck between rock and a hard place I know there's not a right or wrong answere as to what I should do with the dogs just personal opinions but I would like to here what you guys have to say about it thanks for the help

Do one of a few things. Cull dogs, hunt them seperately, let the dog sit at home for awhile. I would hunt them separately personally and see if that changes things. Never take them at the same time from home. If that's the case, decide which dog you value more as an asset.

Edit: after rereading your post, I see you've already made a decision. If he's a good dog, just make sure he gets in the right hands.

Brandon I have a friend who owned some dogs that refused to run with strange dogs he told me it was an inherted trait. Sounds like you are sure the dogs are running good game. Try hunting the dog alone. Brandon if you really like that dog I would try laying him up for maybe a month. I had an experience with a young hound that was breaking track and running deer. Got so disgusted shocking and etc I had given up and laid him up as a hopeless case. To my shock after a long lay up I hunted him because my wife said hunt him or else. That ended his deer problem and made me a believer in laying a dog up. Something I had read written by John Wick years ago and being young had deciced was insane. Did not want to advise you at first because I felt like best not with me being a previous owner of the other male. Brandon as I worked around the place today I thought of another issue I want to share with you it has been my experience when you allow a dog to start running Grey Fox you may have to rebreak them off coyote. Ofcoarse this is just my experience and you can decide what you want to do. Good luck Al
