I keep hearing more and more about folks using this type cross on bear and bobcat. I have not tried it, but might befor I die.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

What I have seen is that when crossing running dogs onto tree hounds you usually lose cold nose trailing ability but gain faster speed on track and more athletic type dogs

I would say that geneally speakin there could be some truth to that but of course their are exceptions to all rules. One thing that I can guarantee you is this though. "If you think you have seen dogs with desire without ever seeing a running dog, think again cause there is absolutely no comparison." A running dog will test even the greatest of men without question.

I will go so far as to say that 99% of big game hunters dont need any Running Walker blood in their yard. The concept behind their breeding does not apply to most big game hunters. I am new to them for the most part and I love them but I also hunt the right kind of running dog cause I aint needing what them Running Walkers of today got inside them.

I thin your statement on biggame hunters don`t need runnendog in their yard is a extreamly beginners view with absolutely no merriott to it as its not based on facts .It`s goen back too the well and cullen the point hunt line out of the Treeing Walker dogs and putting hunt, desire to run a track right and brains and guttscto fight biggame not other hounds back into the Treeing Walker bloodlines .Mr Nance, James Merchant,Joe House, Mr Johnson,Mr Finnly, and on and on as hunters and breeders used it too fceate ledgons in their own kept lines of Treeing Walkers .The right kind of runnen dog is pretty standard in a big stride flagg tailed runnen walker and from a Ga.Maryland July/ ya det offspring out of a real tracken and coldtrailen runnen dog line and its matches anything in nose of a coon hound line that I also know. You stumbled on too a keeper line in your view, well keep on stumblen thers morelines out their like that .

What I am sayin is that most folks are weekend warriors nowadays and thats how its gotta be cause we got to work. I dont think most folks want what them dogs carry with them.

Here in the northwest you'd better have some in your pack,or your catch percentages are gonna suffer.

That's basically all I was talkin about. I often wonder too if the running dogs that folks are using out west on big game are anything like them boys have on the east coast. I consider them east coast dogs the real time foxhound blood and its absolutely positively without a doubt nothing like the Kansas bred stuff. Not that one is any better than the other but they are as different as night and day.

Almost every "running dog" I see out here is bred down to about half or a quarter running dog . I haven't ever seen anyone running a pure running dog, especially one with papers. Mostly see Trigg crosses and a little running walker and occasionally July. Lots of running dog crosses around here but nothing pure that I know of.

Thats kind of what I figgered partner. Funny thing is that if they are Croghan bred they are probably watered down more than that. Call me crazy but them dogs got an entirely different look to em. Like uh maybe they already added the Treeing Walker blood.

Dan I know your right too a point because we talked about speed vs blinden speed that will take the hound out of most other hounds . But only the female Calhound and the female Ga.Maryland July is so zippy like that from what I`ve found . And ya can have a pack of em and don`t need any other dog power/hell they can tree up and be tought that ! They don`t bark alot under the tree but they will bark up and hold a tree for an hr. or so and then leave if ya don`t locate em up treed. Also they are down rite full of hate for game from the bottem of their harts too the every tooth in their mouth wanten too get it on !That is contradictory too the gentleness of the hounds breeding around other hounds an humans. However, they can learn once on coyotes, or on big game and gaining those catch experiences ,they get bold brassy and get plum ruff-n-tumble attatude.

I'm a big fan of the running dog crosses, but you have to get the right strain of running dog. Get them out of a hunting strain, not field trail bloodlines, or dogs that are just run in the foxpens, and you'll have a lot better chance of getting coldnosed dogs with more track driving ability instead of hot nosed speed demons that may or may not be able to handle a track without overrunning it. I've ran a couple pure registered Julys, and they treed, not great but good enough to get to them. What I had made great cat dogs, but wouldn't run bear. I've seen and heard of other July's that made good bear dogs, and had lots of grit, but mine didn't. My female got accidentally bred by a treeing walker male though, and those pups(which I didn't want) made good bear and cat dogs at an extremely young age. And made good tree dogs.
