A follow up to Something to think about

A while back I wrote of an encounter with a juvenile she lion that ended up with a dead cat killed with a knife. I had asked the readers to give it some thought before killing a female and the consequences of pulling the trigger on one.

A few days after posting the story the only other local hound guy was out with his nephew who is a want to be houndguy and they kill a female. When I heard where they shot the cat I had a feeling this cat had juveniles in the area. I had run into her early in the season in the same location. I knew it was a matter of time before the juveniles showed up, today was the day.
I was out with my daughter and nephew looking for a lion to run as lynx is over for the year. Soon we cut her track and 1 1/2 miles later the dogs had this little girl treed.
I am guessing her wieght between 40 and 50 lbs. I am pretty sure I haven't seen the last of this cat as it is moving into more residential areas.

Whats the chances this young one making it to next winter? 50%

There seems to be some old school hound guys still left out there that thinks shooting game out for dogs makes good dogs! Now I look at my dogs which see 15 % of the game shot out for them, are they crappy dogs? I may think a little to much of my dogs but they catch a pile of game bears, lion and lynx between 70 and 100 trees a year.
Times are changing and houndsmen need to be looked at as conservationist, catch and release hunting with the focus on game management.
Now I don't think killing females should be out lawed and in some cases ok, but when a female is treed, think ,have you done your due diligents in proving this female is infact completely independant.
This often will take more then a day to figure out, kittens including juveniles can be miles away from where you cut a track . Sorry for the rant!

Anyhow we had some fun and got a couple pictures, enjoy.

I couldn't agree more. We as hound hunters are cutting our oun throats. I know here in Colorado, they (Division of Wildlife) have asked all of us to refrain from taking females. I think some of these younger hunters or less experienced hunters need to really consider what they are doing to the sport by taking females or young cats. If they dont think that anti's are getting all this information to hold against us they are crazy!
