I've been thinking about getting the Wife an Automotive GPS for her truck...

But what would really be nice is having one that worked good out in the woods. I've been hunting allot of new country and it's pretty nerve racking having to rely on your hunting buddy to Give you directions over the Radio as to how to get somewhere or when you split up find dogs.

Doesn anyone use a Truck mounted or Automotive GPS out in the woods? I use the handheld ones and just throw them up on the dash and they track ok, but I think it would be allot nicer to have a Large screen and have it following me always availible not using batteries and much easier to take a look at a map and see if there are any roads or bluffs via TOPO software. I'm not so much interested in the turn here directions but rather showing roads and terrian while hunting in a new spot.

Secondly, Does anyone have any recomendation about the Best GPS TOPO software.. (especially for Washington and Oregon) I think I'm using Mapsource right now but I'm always looking for better.

A friend of mine bought a Pioneer nav system last fall and it worked great in Oregon,Washington and Idaho all winter long.I'm not sure what it is called but I did see it on the Pioneer website.It replaces the stereo in the dash,has cd,dvd player,bluetooth,ipod jack,sirius and xm radio.Near as I can tell the only thing it won't do is wax your truck. It is a really cool setup,not sure what nav system it uses but it did work in the woods.

I don't know much about vehicle mounted systems, but i believe the best topo software is Delorme 5.0. It allows you to do so many things. It also allows you to view the area in 3-d or overlay aerial photos of the area. It's pretty neat. It cost a few hundred dollars, but you can also find a good copy for free on the internet torrent sites.

Try a Garmin GPSMAP 276c (color screen) does all the hwy turn stuff, doubles as a BIG handheld when off the dashmount. I have one in every truck, work great and the guides pack a Garmin GPSMAP76 cx handheld so with the radio-"bingo"- everyone is on the same page!

We use a map version that shows all the terrain (topographic)and roads (for Canada) find the equivelant, we use a MAPSOURCE product from Garmin.
