hey, has anyone heard anything more of Scott Sasso's book "Hunying the Maine Bobcat with hounds". Sounds like a pretty interesting book! though I don't live in Maine, I might be able to pick up some valuable info!

Some chapters were published in Full Cry last year but I never heard if the book itself was out in print yet for the public. If someone knows and how to order let us know it looked like good informative reading.

Coondogger, let me be the first to tell you that "hunying" bobcats is no easy task. Hunying or honeying as we call it out west can be quite dangerous. For starters bobcats are not good cuddlers, which is one of the main techniques employed by the acomplished "Bobcat Hunyers" of the southwest, where this practice was first utilized around the turn of the century. Such famous hunyers like "Snugglin' Sam McGerkin" and one eyed "Rooster Jimerson" were legends in their craft. Generally a small furry dog was used to lure the cat into hugging range where a lanky long limbed cowboy would latch on (or commonly termed hook up) to the bobcat. At this point all heck broke lose and many hunyers lost lips ears and eyes. So brutal was this sport that it was outlawed in the bay area of California in 1919. I'm not certain how the burley loggers of the north picked it up, but I have seen old black and white photographs of wild eyed woodsmen gathered in a circle placing bets and drinking whiskey while some hapless hunyer had a shortail glomed on to his proboscus. Few dare to try it these days, much like the grizz ropers and the legendary kangaroo leg wrestlers of the outback, I'm afraid it is a lost art. It's good to see a revival in the sport. I hope the next generation does not use this flack jackets and sissy helmets the bull riders of the modern era have resorted to. Whats that? Ooooh Uhhhm, never mind my friend just informed me that the book is about Bobcat Hunting not Hunying, sorry about that.
