I have had two nights in the last month that my seven year old dead broke, lead dog female has ran a porcupine track the first one she did while I was roading just her and she caught it on the ground got lit up, and wouldn't stop. I was astonished cause she has never trashed on me in the four years I've owned her, then last night were out running coons and she is running the road striking, well she finds a track and takes off like a bat out of hell. Well after running this track for about a mile and all the switch backs I figure she must be on a Bob so I through my younger dog on it with her bad idea cause they both end up with a face full of quils. Any answers as to why this dog is trashing on just porcupines out of the blue and how do you break them from this? An old timer said they smell like bear and his lead bear dog would trash on them sometime, is this true? The thing I don't get is we have tons of porcupines so she has had to pass their tracks a thousand times why run them now?

Put the boots to her and then dont be none to kind when pulling them. Some dogs just seem to like porkys but with time you can break them. Andy

Yeah I gave her a whopping and lit her up both times and I don't think there is a nice way to take them quils out. Hopefully it's over cause that ruins a hunt, the second Time she did it I made both of them finish the night out hunting all quiled up and didn't feel a damn bit bad!

first off bear ,and porcupine two different scents your own nose will tell you that if you smell both animals.dogs looking to get their teeth into something without much effort puts porcupine at the top of the list.they stink and arent runners.some dogs get an ignorance for them and will never give them up till the day they die.if she was a good hound for seven years chances are if you punish her and get her back on good game she will recover. my question would be is she doing good when she is on good game ? if not she may be taking her frustrations out on porcupine.

Mine have always quit after getting the quills pulled out a couple of times.I've gotten the quills stuck in me from wrestling with the dog.When i pulled them out it hurt !

We have quite a few of the porqies down here as well but for some reason, my dogs have been leaving them alone. I am hunting two pups and I am sure that will change in the next couple of days.

You say about having a younger dog . Did she start doing it after you got the younger dog ?

YEAH she does great on whatever you put her on, but I'm starting to wonder if she just wants to catch something, cause we had a bad cat season and couldn't find tracks and the ones we did find we're old and she pounded them out along ways but lost them in shell and cliffs so maybe she is frustrated and just wants a catch. Well that's why I'm running them on coon is to get them some action so hopefully it helps.

He is actually her pup, but he is two now and they have been running together since he was six months so I don't think it has much to do with that, and she has always hunted well with company. I also still let her start the tracks when I hunt them together, so she shouldn't be throwing a fit.
