Husker Red, Iowa and Nebraska are home to many excellent coon hounds and curs. I know how it is when you want that dog, but slow down a little and do some research. I know you are good on the computer so do some searching around. This board is populated by alot of big game type folks, but there are boards that were formed more with coon hunters in mind. I think there is one called Coondawg or something like that. I know UKC has a board. PKC Might have something. Check also NKC. I dont know if ACHA still exists, but they might have something too. These last four have been known to sponsor coon hound competitions, and I bet you could find one in Nebraska or fairly close to you in Iowa. Kansas and Minnesota are full of hounds too. Missouri has put out some of the best coonhounds known to man. Most states have coon hunters clubs.
I know you are in the hound mode, but many houndsmen in those states have switched over to curs for many reasons. One reason is that big places to hunt are getting harder to find and curs tend to hunt with and for you where as the full hounds I have known had to be taught to pay attention to who owned them. Another reason is that some lines of cur make exceptional family pets and are less of a problem to neighbors, and things are just getting more crowded.
I know some of the finest folks in the world hunting curs in Iowa if you are interested in going that direction, I can give you contact information. They typically catch over 20 coon a night toward the beginning of the season, and sometimes a lot over 20. They have a blast squirrel hunting those dogs and that opens up a lot of other doors for you and your dog. They do put on a couple competition hunts for curs each year. They squirrel hunt during the day, and coon hunt at night. They were just awarded 2013 second place NKC Squirrel dog of the year.
I also know a man in western Nebraska who has some of the best Leopard Hound blood that I know of. If I had to take one of the 7 UKC registered coonhounds and catch bobcats, I would first go to this line of dogs. He has too many dogs right now and some nice young ones too.
The same blood is available in Western Iowa and so is probably closer to you, but he promotes his dogs so I think charges more for them. Might save on gas though.
Send me a PM if you want contact info for any of these folks.
The strongest suggestion I can make for you is to hunt with some dogs before you buy one. Then buy a pup or young dog from the dogs that showed you what coon hunting is about. That will do several important things for you and I wont list them now.
You should be able to find a real nice pup for around $200.00. You can pay more if you want to, but you don't have to.
There are many coon hunters that would go out of their way to help a young man like yourself. They know you are the future of the sport, and you are rare.
Do some digging. treat it like a crime case on CSI. The answers are out there and they are much closer than you think. I guarantee there are coon hounds or curs within an hours drive of your house.
A little warning: you posting a 600.00 might pull in some characters that you should stay away from. If anyone sends you a PM that you are unsure about, copy and paste it on a post out here in front so we can all see what kind of deal they are willing to give a young man in highschool for his first coon hound.
And I would say to anyone willing to help this guy out, as we should, don't PM him anything you would not want posted out front here.

There is a Redbone yearbook that comes out, or used to. Also UKC might be able to give you contact info for breeders closer to you. This add was down below in the redbone section. I guess they were born in April:

Husker Red,
You seem like a fine prospect to make a really good dog man but listen to what David has offered for advice. Once you have laid your money down the deal is over, take your time and really get your money's worth for your first dog. There are plenty of good dogs out there and there are also lots that are aren't so good that are being sold just to make someone some cash. Take your time and get yourself something from parents that hopefully you have seen hunt for yourself and like the traits you see. The time you spend finding the right dog to start with will be a BIG reward in itself. You are young and have a lot of time to spend on your dogs so getting started out on the right track will make your hunting experiences so much more enjoyable. Learn from the advice of individuals that are offering good, honest, advice. This advice is coming from individuals, myself included, that have learned from their mistakes, you don't need to make those same mistakes to learn from them.
Also when you get your pup get yourself a copy of John Wick's "Walk with Wick" and learn from it, it will be money well spent. Best of luck.

David and Bearsnva gave you some of the best advice you can get . listen to it.
there is people that will come to the bait of $600 just to get your dollar then you end up with a dog that just might not be worth a cold can of dog pee.
do some research and if possible hunt with who you make a decision on.
Jerry Spech of Wahaoo Nebraska has produced some good hounds.(blueticks)_ would bet ol Jerry will show you his hounds in the timber.
Keep the cash in your pocket until you are reasonable sure that what you pick will be good in the woods.
Pups are always a little bit of a gamble but hunt with the mother...and sire if possible
a "broke dog for $600" will most likely have some holes in it be dang sure they will show what it will do. I think David will give you some other good contacts.

Thank you everybody, your inputs have made me realize how dumb I was about posting a price, well I guess i really appreciate everything and I was wondering if a black an tan could be used to hunt squirrels in the day an coons at night, the land won't b a problem because I actually work on a two hundred acre farm an they know some people w good coon land, also, what are uh thoughts on taking a yellow lab w us if I got a hound just to go along for the ride?

A cur will make a better combo dog for what you are wanting. A hound will burn through 200ac in a heart beat . I see no problem with you taking your lab as long as it isn't mean to other dogs. But if your set on a hound you can train them for both as well.

I recently got in contact with an Alan White from Decorah Iowa and he has Black and Tans for four hundred dollars a piece, he says he will promise any pup to trail and tree by the time they turn one, if not he will replace the pup for free, does anyone know him and is this a good deal?

If the first pup doesn't work out , Why would you want another one from the same line ? I've seen $250-300 pups with the same guarantee $400 seem a lot to me. Ask him if he will give you your money back on the guarantee. Under stand you will have to pay shipping to send first one back and shipping for the new pup. Have you looked on the UKC site yet ?

I understand I will have to pay for shipping and lots of other stuff too, I've been saving for a long ass time, I work on a farm and throw hay bales and I have made good money the last two years, financials aren't an issue but getting my parents on board is where the only struggle is, thanks tho for the thought, that redbone add looks pretty tempting tho I've heard nothing but bad about redbones

John Wick famously said: "Find the man, then you will find the dog"
I am not your dad, but if I was, and knowing what I know, I would not let you buy a dog until you found someone to go hunting with. Find a top hunter with a good reputation. Hunt with him a few times so you know what a good dog is, and can observe a good handler. And if you come to trust him, and he comes to like you, try to buy something from him, or on his recommendation.
You live in a region with a good population of coon hunters. You are only a few miles from Missouri, which might be called the coon hunters capital of the world. Iowa is a stones throw away, and that state is plumb full of great coon dogs. Your own state has plenty of them as well. I know if you will do your due diligence, you will find a good hunter that will let you come out with him. Going to a competition hunt as a spectator might be a good idea.
You have no idea how much frustration, trouble and money this advice will save you if you will take it.
I don't really expect you to take it because you will probably have to learn the hard way like the rest of us did.
I know you will have fun and learn a lot however you decide to go. Make sure you keep us up to date on what you are doing!
