Just curious, Had a litter of pups born 6 weeks ago and one has different color eyes, 1 dark and 1 light blue. Does this happen often and has any one had one that turned out good. Not sure what to think.

While in Australia talking to some dog breeders, I mentioned the Australian Sheppard and none of them had ever heard of one?? I described what they looked like and that many had blue eye's or eye. They said that any dog with a blue eye has Koolie (or Coolie) in it!! I had never heard of one ? I looked it up on the web and it looks alot like an Australian Sheppard! The only time I've heard Koolie was in N.D. and a ranchers called a deep draw a Koolie.
From what they told me I wonder if our Australian Sheppard is really an Australian Koolie?? And they have been crossed into some of the hounds, curs, and who knows what??

It will take a lot more than one eye being a different color determining whether the dogs turn out. Don't mean for this to sound sarcastic but that is just a fact. Look at it this way, at least they will be easier to spot at the tree! Hell, if he is at the front of the pack it is better than smelling a butt!

In the 60's and 70's there was a fellow I knew that had a bunch od Goodman hounds. a good number of them had a blue eye.
some strains of Blueticks have the Chalk eye/watch eye/blue eye pop out
I have seen some strains of walkers that showed it also.
other than looks the only problem I've seen was when a few were crossed together, the resulting ones with 2 blue eyes sometimes were deaf---- that indicated a merle factor there as in the leopard dogs the merle factor does have that happen.--- McDuffie did not advocate crossing 2 merles.

I would like to hear more on those Goodman hounds. I raise some dogs with a blue eye and have been asked if they have some Goodman blood.

I have noticed that the one "glass" (blue) eye often shows up in litters of bluetick X Walker. Never heard of one with a vision problem, though.

John-- If you check real good you just might discover the Goodman hounds pre-dated Elbert Vaughn a long way.

Guy Ormiston of Oklahoma(writes for"Coonhound Bloodlines") wrote a good article on the chalk eye as he called it.If memory serves he attributed it to running dog blood in the Hyde hounds which are part of the genetic makeup of the Vaughn blues.I believe that is what John is refering to.

Vaughn, bought some of his first hounds from a Dr. I have his name around here somewhere. At that time and several years latter, none of his hounds had anything but brown eyes because a true hound has brown eyes. During those years and before that time and today, if you look at a pack of fox hounds they all have brown eyes. Something else, that has blue eyes was bred in. There is no other way for a true hound to have blue eyes.

He don't know, they came from Vaughn. Running dogs are hounds and hounds have brown eyes. Trace papers back and see where they lead to.

John,my curiosity is aroused now.If it wasn't running dog that gave us the blue eye wouldn't it have to be a shepherd(probably aussie) as varminator stated???
