I got this younger walker female she is one year old and she isn't open on track like my previous hounds were. She is game driven and she will bark hard on a coon hide drag if i throw it aroubd and she will bark some on squirrels when she trees them if I coach her. Back this week we had a bobcat cross out in front of us while on walk. I turned her loose and she beelined to cat as it was running, and the cat I think went in a nearby bluff. But she trailed and backtracked but would never bark. Any suggests? Would hunting her with other hounds help? Thanks for the help.

You did say Walker? That is a problem that is only getting worse as folks breed for the competition type hounds. They really want the dog to bark only once on the ground and then be able to call the dog treed. Since the Walker dogs are winning most all of the big competition hunts, this breed seems to be getting tighter mouthed on the ground with every mating.
Adios,
Gary

I agree with Gary to many guys are breeding for collar and blood lines instead of breeding 2 dogs that hunts good I've seen a decline in hounds over the past 10 years ears are getting shorter the cold nosed dog that barks on every track until he or she trees is few and far between if that was my dog I would keep putting that dog on game with older dogs you said she lost the cat in the bluff but if you had a older dog with her to help push the track it would really help her conference I hope this helps a little

I appreciate the advice. This morning she treed at a hollow snag and wouldn't give up. It seemed to be a hot scent. She has been barking at visual and/or smell from when we pass housecats on the road. I plan to get her on some coon in the next few weeks, I agree that she just needs the confidence to follow out a track. And to get hunted a lot on good game.
