Man, it has been DRY this year! Aggravating as all get out. Get a track started early in the dirt, get it worked out and lined out, it hits the south slope where the sun has been for about 2 hours, and bam! end of story. This has turned into very frustrating days for me and the dogs. They dislike catching as much as I.

The upsides, I guess, would be less wet feet from lack of snow, and my dogs are "dirt sniffing/drifting" with an increased ability to work the dirt. It has been fun to watch the improvement and the different travel patterns of snow vs dirt. They are getting faster and more efficient and hopefully a catch soon. Hell, I'd be happy with a lion at this point.

It has also made for less prey migration, which in turn has made the usual travel and territory markers over a wide range. I have to go high and deep to find what I'm looking for this year. No concentration of anything.

Oh well! It is hunting and I'm not going to quit going to the woods, it's too peaceful. Especially with hound music.

Hunting them tough dry conditions is what makes a dog and in my opinion a good cold trailer. Next time you have moisture or snow them dogs will be a night and day difference. Good luck

So I have heard many times over hunt a dog in dry crappy conditions does nothing but make them better at cold trailing. Then the dry ground lion dogs in arizona and Utah should make pretty short work of bobcats in any area with a touch of moisture! So how true is this statement? Andy

Twist, Your talking to different style of dogs. No I don't think that implies. I take a grubbing blue tick and hunt it, its still a grubbing blue tick. You take a Bobcat dog and hunt it in tough conditions when easy conditions comes about don't you think it would be easier???

Not laying dogs up for 6 months and hunting thru the dry season makes better dogs. IMO

A hunting hound is a hunting hound!

Dry, wet, snow, rain, doesn't matter.
Breeding, Exposure, Training, and Desire make the dog.

Conditions will either enhance a dogs ability or show its fault and weakness. In the long run it will determine wether or not to keep or cull.

I hunt 3 main types of geography with variable climates in a single day. My dogs hunt all of them or none of them. If it is done right, a dog should have no problem acclimating to different areas or regions if MAN or WOMAN did their part.

And if you are not obeying the law you are creating more problems for everyone!!!!

I was under impression there were no bobcats up there let alone a season on them yr round. Andy

Not even a bobcat on the island. 9.5 month cougar 12 month coon season here.

I think its great a lot of guys mix and match seasons we can hunt coon here yr round also but would much rather road and work hounds on handling issues in our off season rather than coon hunt as it does no good in my eyes to hunt vetran bobcat dogs on coon. About like running little bears. Again this is just my opinion. I do believe it sure doesn't hurt young dogs to learn the basics on coon though in this area. Andy

This is the "BOBCAT" section. When you start saying that you do not lay up your dogs the implication states you continue hunting throughout the year. My dogs spend alot of time outdoors throughout the year, they are my hiking buddies. That does not mean we run when we are not supposed to.

I hunt the first day through to the last day of our season. And get all types of conditions.

I'm with twist on this one. Coons are just a lame play toy for a good cat dog, for a young dog they are good education.

It would be great to have a 9.5 month season here, especially if it was cat.

We aren't allowed to run game at night in BC so running coon builds good cold trailing dogs in my opinion as most are layed up. Also makes excellent locate tree dogs in our big timber.

When I do travel to interior to run the smaller cats my dogs don't seem to have a problem so it works for me. Gave up running bears about 10 years ago and the quality of my dogs is night and day different.
