Does anyone have experience with this? Courier used? Any thing special to ship to Canada?

Thanks in advance.

I did it once. I bought a packaged deal from ICSB ( http://www.ik9sb.com/Puppy_Pak.asp ) Followed all the instructions. I shipped it overnight thru UPS from North Central CA to Northern OR. He had a Vet do the AI (which you could probably do yourself if you order the supplies and read up) Ended up with 6 fat healthy pups, 1 male and 5 females.

Just found out that you can't send chilled semen across international borders over night .Chilled semen lasts about 24 hrs, some say maybe 48 .Anyway its probably not worth attempting it that way.

Who said it doesn't last? I sent it on a Thursday morning, it was supposed to be overnight. UPS did not deliver it until Saturday afternoon. They checked the sample and the motility was excellent and they AI'd her and she had 6 pups. This was also in the summer time when it was warm out, I worried it would have spoiled. This time a year it'd probably last a while. Semen is good for at least 72 hours.

I'm sure it would be a lot tougher to do internationally, my need to go frozen semen. But from everything I have read and been told by the biggest Reproduction Center here is with extender the semen can live 10-14 days. But the minimum is 72 hours. I definitely wouldn't try it in the summer months, but in the colder months when you don't have to worry about it warming and spoiling it would be worth the try. Shipping it and the kit to ship it total only costs around $100.

That's good to know. The vet said it needed to be there overnight and the internet said it would last 24 hrs and maybe 48. I'll do some more research .Thanks.

Extender comes in kit. If it takes longer than 48 hr to get there I would be pretty skeptical to put all the money into AI and have it not work. Andy

I was the recipient of the fresh chilled Redwood is referring to. That being said everything she has said is 100% correct. I personally looked at the lil guys in the microscope with the vet and everything was good to go. Super easy process to do. The vet that performed the procedure was actually a fill in vet to that clinic as was a large animal vet. He has never done a dog AI, yet it was a complete success. The procedure literally consisted of sticking the "injector" lol (whatever the instrument is actually called) in, slowly he felt the far wall, pulled back slightly and let er fly. we held her hind end up for a few minutes and then we walked out. Took all of maybe 45 seconds to inject then 10 minutes holding her up. As for the shipping package, that consisted of a Styrofoam cool with 3 ice packs wrapped in paper.

So if your a DYI type of person you shouldn't have any trouble what so ever doing this procedure. also you wanna let it come to room temperature before you inject. 10 to 15 minutes. If not it was very reasonable price to have it done though just don't allow them to do an exam or any of that bs, thats where they get ya on jacking up the price.

You can also get a kit to test your female for ovulation for the correct time to breed her.
