Curs not cold nosed enough?

Hey guys I am a cur fanatic! I like them way more than hounds for coon. But I'm gonna get a few curs just for bear hunting and I've heard that a cur is not cold nosed enough for bear but I've never had a problem with coon. I can't afford one of the special bred pups but I think with proper training I can get some damn good bear dogs. What do y'all think

mine tree bears. they don't waste my time trying to trail a too cold track tho. a lot of hunters praise a dog that trails for hours but don't get it jumped. some say that's cold nosed and I used to deal with that till I switched to curs. if they leave barking its going to be ran.

Hey old dog just out of curiosity what kind of curs do you run??? I'm looking at getting a hotter nosed dog for the pack. Also I hear that they make better family and companion dogs as well.

The curs I've had are about equal in scenting ability to my Plotts, but not as cold nosed as the Walker and Black/Tan I have had. Generally they are medium nosed, and they can definitely track big game. I would not call them hot nosed at all. Although there are hot nosed lines (mostly squirrel bred stuff like Streak) as well as some that can cold trail like a good hound (Kemmer's Gold Nugget and other lines). My curs have all been very easy to train, much smarter than most hounds (although my Plotts have been very intelligent too) and handle like any cow dog out there. I'm mainly a Plott hunter now but will always have a cur in my pack. They are very versatile hunting dogs.

Okay so would it be good to hunt just a pack of black mouth or mountain curs for bear I have had Black and Tans, Potts, and walkers and hunting and training curs have been so much more enjoyable so will just a pack of curs work for bear

Only plotts will tree bears

lol. There are plenty of curs that do great on big game. My issue with curs is the kemmer blackmouth and mtn. curs don't have the stamina for them runners like a hound. other than that I don't have anything bad to say about any of them and I know that if they are treeing coon they will probably tree you some bear. As far as your last question about will only a pack of walkers work for bear well I wouldn't try them they suck

Running walkers have tons of stamina and fast I do know that . Hunted plenty of them in Minnesota . I have seen some curs that got what a good hound has but those are special ones. Running hogs is a lot different. I know guys that hunt hogs with good border collies and are very successful . I have seen guys try to run border collies on bear just doesn't work if its a runner or a walking baying bear they just get whore out . Not trying to sound like an asshole but a catahula or blackmouth just don't make good bear dogs. If crossed like you do then maybe it's possible. Just my experience .

Hell half of them don't even make good hog dogs these days. HAHAHA! I got a buddy down in the east texas that has old time cur dogs that are basically cur dog running hound crosses of some sort over the years. You would actually like them justahunter. I will try to throw up a pic of one of them and you will immediately see what I see.

I have had a cur in my pack for years. Smaller Kemmer was the last one to ever quit, bear or lion he was a large reason for the success I had. I have a Clark bred leopard right now he does not have a stop button he goes all the time. The curs mixed with my big blueticks have been a winning combination for me. My curs tend to bite the part that don't bite back, hence I have bigger vet bills for the blue dogs they just don't seem to care what end they get a hold of..

That's interesting. I wouldn't get use to that if I were you. I like a good cur dog but I have never seen one that could hang with my running dogs day after day. Actually they wouldn't even come close and I got short hour dogs in the running hound world.

that dog is put together awesome dan. but I will add that there is some kemmers that will stay on a running track as well. I have one out of three that will stay hooked in the coastal brush like a running cross. he aint front dog but he aint embarrassing either. last time I went to ore with him he came out of that brush with non hair left on his fore head he ran so hard trying to keep up with them running crosses. my other one will quit if he don't think he can catch it tho. big hole as far as I am concerned. they all do fine as a pack here in Idaho.
