Another question

I have a 6 year old dog, that was due Sept 8. . This morning she had 1 pup, which was dead. My question is can she still have any more pups? She has not had any more yet today. Once they start having pups, are they done? What may have caused this. I was not hunting or working her. How can I tell if she is done?
I am new to this pup stuff, we really want pups out of this dog.
Thanks

I question whether another hound got ahold of your female for the delivery day to be soo far off or whether the litter was actually premature.

Was this your females first litter. What was the physical condition of the dead pup? Was it fully developed? Was it the right coloring as far as breed?

She has had pups before, but not for a few years. I do not think an other dog could of breed her, she is always in a kennel, the pup looked a little small but it looked developed ok at least what I can see, and it was the right color.

She may have absorbed the litter. In other words she may have miscarried and that pup was the only one that wasn't. Sometimes if the litter was not developing right or if she was exposed to something that may have caused her to miscarry. Never know how nature works. She could have even had other pups that you didn't see and she could have eatten them if they were not right or dead.

I would wait a heat cycle then breed her again on the second heat to make sure she has recovered fully. Good luck

A lot of good advice. I have seen them carry on having pups for 48 hours but there certainly could be a pup hung also and she will die if not cared for. As Tessa said the absorbtion issue is crazy but it does happen, and as Dennis said you could have a bunch of dead pups not stimulating the female to deliver. Bad news but the vet is the first thing not tomorrow tonight if you like that dog!!!

I took her to the vet, he said she looked good, and the pup looked about 2 weeks early, he did not know why she aborted the pup. He could not feel any other pups.

Good to hear you got it checked out. Like I said in my previous post those things do happen and it is natures way if something is not right. You can always try again, but I would skip a heat cycle to let her recover.

Thanks for all the help. I am learning a lot about these dogs. But still have a long ways to go.
