Excellent looking dogs Gavin. I find the GS very interesting. Back some years ago E.S. Traverse in Vermont and I did a lot of conversing and study on the GS, Porcelaine of France and the Grand Bleu Gascogne as well. A number of the early frontier dogs of the west displayed traits that markings and features that were doubtless lineage back to these Europeon hounds. Some of the dogs carried to Eastern Cananda by the French were carried on to the Louisiana area as many of those folks migrated south. These made their way to Texas and then further west as pioneers opened the country up.

Of all the French hounds the Porcelaine must be the most striking looking breed.They are highly regarded amoungst the French houndsmen I have had the fortune to meet.Here is a picture from a Boar hunting magazine called SANGLIER PASSION.Enjoy.

Striking for sure. I can show you severl photos of some dogs of western pioneer breeding that display a very similar build and coloration.

The more I looked at old photos of big game hounds, the more I thought that there was more to the mix other than running fox hound and Bleu Gascogne.
Especially Bill Greens hounds. Some of his lighter colored hounds have a head and build that reminds me of the Porcelain and the GS. I think there is a very real possibility that he crossed to these breeds. It may be where the "Sport" coloration is coming from. I have never seen a Grand Bleu that was Sport colored.

From watching the new Bill Green CD's, one can see the influence of the Gascon Saintongeois breed on the Green hounds. One of those little pups in the pen might have what it takes.

I believe Bill's "French Connection" was his older friend Leon Whitney.
Leon was trying to recreate a white bloodhound. The French articles I read stated that to do this the GS breed would be the best place to start. Any of Leons' personal notes or info would really shed some light on this.

Some of the Lee Bro.'s Redticks and a Bluetick they had that possibly had the French GS and porcelaine came from the Goswicks. I have seen some old pics of these dogs and the French influence is very apparent.

The old Ozark Mtn strain was another strong fountainhead of this old French blood. A lot of them turned into O.O.Grant and Sugar Creek.

I got some of my info from Writings by OO Grant .. In the 1935 Magazine Mountain Music.The Editors were the Whos Who of the Foundation Blues and Big Game Houndsmen ..

Later I found 4 "1921" Hunter-Trader-Trapper Magizines that told of the French hounds of La. and Fla.

This Photo is out of a 1924 Book "Cooning with Cooners" .. Big great looking Redticks, Very Rare to see this kind of hound so far back..

What is in those 1921 H-T-T magazines?

Mostly on How to Cook your Possum, Skunk and other critters you catch .. But their were a few good Stories mostly on Coon Hunting with a lantern .. I tried that one night and for the Life of me I could'nt figgure how they did it I couldn't see more than 5' up the tree.. But they usualy just sent the "Black Feller" up the tree to shake out the coon or Just Cut the Tree down.. But their a coup of Older Houndsmen that talked about Were their hounds Came From..

My opion is that in the begining we all came from europe so i bet all the dogs did to. Some food for thought.
