What's it mean if someone refers to a hound as a "running dog"?

To me it means the dog is a Running Walker, July, or Trigg. Or one of the above crossed to a tree hound.

Would you like the short answer or the long?..............or do you already know?

This is a subject that is quite complex depending upon the strains of each you are comparing. As some have blurred the line between them.
Not wanting to bore you with a long winded answer, a simple way of looking at it would be comparing a beagle to a coonhound (Treeing Walker)
Two of the most notable differences would be LOCATING ABILITY---- and lack of LOCATING
Second would be tracking style precisely the desire to work with the "PACK" verses trying to get away from the pack with the game.
I could go on for pages on this subject, but I don't know exactly where your interest is.
I have had this conversation with a couple members of this board and we have very different opinions of what makes a good one. I was lucky early in life to be associated with the right people that introduced me to some of the most important hounds men in the country, looking back its hard to believe it happened to me.
If you have specific questions I will try to answer.

I get it. So a running dog is a pack dog? This guy on YouTube hunts around 15 dogs at a time on bobcat said most are "running dogs" while some of the straight coondogs were false treeing.

Most full coon dogs can't run with fox dogs for any distance. On the outside on wild game( not in a pen) if you are on red fox, coyote or deer a coon dog breed is out of the race pretty quick. They get to far behind to do any good in the race. Grey fox and cat, they can do better, but not enough. I've hunted both a good bit, endurance with speed is the biggest difference I see. Most running dogs want tree but there are exceptions. Most coon dogs tree but there are some exceptions. Both breeds hunt about the same on a feeding track, drifting out, warming the track up. Good tree dog can warm a feeding track up as fast as running dog can. Get you 4 running dogs and 4 treeing walkers that you know are not mixed with anything else and you will see for yourself.
