Anyone live or hunt in this area? I am looking at buying 20 acres, it borders Potlatch Land and is on the Cd'A Reservation. What are the rules concerning hunting on the Potlatch/Reservation property?

Hey Machias,I don't live in St. Maries, but spend a huge amount of time there. I will be headed there this week for a couple of weeks. There is good hunting all around there, lots of good roads.Get on the Potlatch website for info on permits.I don't know much about res hunting but I don't think they want you hunting on them.If you want you can call me and I will tell you what I know.

Fred the Res permit are simple you get them in Plummer 20 miles away. I believe they are $10 or $20 dollars for a year.

Before you bought land over there, I would check the recent wolf population. Hate to see a houndmen spend money and in two years can't hunt his dogs because of the wolves. Just a thought.

Fred, not sure about your plans, but residency is living here more than 6 months out of the year. And a few guys have gotten busted for buying the "Lifetime" licence, and then moving away, and coming back hunting with dogs. The Lifetime licence takes you out of the non-resident quota for tags, but you still have to have permits, which it does not grant. They are going to be tightening up the regulations, so the vendors of licenses know they aren't allowed to issue Hound Handler permits to anybody with an out of state drivers license, even if they have a Idaho Lifetime hunting license. I know of three doggers getting cited for it in the past three years.

I'm aware, but I appreciate you looking out for me :) That is not why I bought the land. I will be buying the non-resident tags, probably for a couple of years and applying for the non-resident hound permits. I am looking for and have found a get away honey hole for a cabin and riding my mules. I'll end up spending around $1300 a year on licenses, tags and permits. Funny thing, now that my youngest has turned 16, it will be cheaper for him to hunt with me in Idaho on the Jr tags as it will for him to hunt as a resident here in WA, at least untill he is 18. Thanks again and have a good fall.

One thing Idaho has gotten right, is being good to the kids, and making it easy to get them out hunting.
I highly doubt you'll regret getting that piece of land, especially since you have Mules. It's a real nice area, and your 16 year old will have a ball.
Take care. Preston

Check the Potlach regulations closely because they have fees, for animals, atvs, and it seems just about everything. It can add up quick.

Fred, I own an outfitting business in St John Wa and in Potlatch Id. My property is right near the tree farm. I will be up there in a couple of weeks getting my dogs from Mike Kemp and maybe we could get together and get out. I am new to hounds, ( of my own) so I would love all the info i could get. Also we could hunt my land. I do elk hunts there but never tried to run dogs on anything.

Hey sounds like a plan, we could go chase some coons here in WA. I run coons now and then down near St Johns, Pine City and Maldon area. Maybe go out and calls some yotes if you were interested.

Give me a contact number and I will shoot you a call when I head up. I have a ton of property between stjohn and Potlatch that we can hunt. I dont know anyone up there except for the owners and their families so I would like to get out and run some dogs. Ive never seen any dog hunters the times im up on the properties. I am usually only up there during the deer and elk seasons.
