Hounds on Cows

    Hi Fellas,

Long time lurker here, never posted. I did some searching before bringing this up, couldn’t find any direct info. Please correct me if a thread already exists.

I’ve always loved the Slash Ranch Hounds book. I actually know one of Dub’s grandsons, who told me stories about his bear crazy grandpa in New Mexico for years before I ever even thought about following my own hounds around. I was amazed when I put it all together half way through the book. Pretty cool piece of history.

One of the standout things Dub talks about in the book is the fact that they used their hounds on wild cattle as well as game.

Is anyone out there really doing this anymore? Running straight hounds on maverick cattle to bay and hold small bunches to wait for the rope rather than blowing in with cur type catch dogs and getting everybody tore up in the process, lol?

I’d be way interested in hearing about it if anybody’s still out there running hounds on cows!

I can’t say if they are for sure or not. Of course there are lots of cows dogs here in Texas that carry a percentage of hound. Cajun told me a couple of weeks ago that he sent 3 plotts to the west coast that were used as cow dogs. I don’t remember if he said how long ago that was. I also don’t know if they were being used on stray cattle or not.
