The wife and I are heading to the Flagstaff area between Christmas and new years to visit some of her family, and I was planning on doing some snooping around to try and find a few cats . I'm not taking any hounds with me, just checking a few areas out.
I was thinking of looking around Show Low, Payson, Strawberry, etc. Are there any lions left in that country? Like I mentioned above, I'm not taking any dogs with me, so I won't be hunting, just looking. I always enjoy just finding a lion track!
Thanks for any input,
Duster

Still some lions in those areas but some of it is pretty tough country. The historic rim country gets plenty of pressure from hunters but it is such big country there are still hunting opportunities for those who will endure the terrain.I haven't hunted in there for several years choosing to hunt areas a little closer to home, but enjoyed hunting there and even some of the areas a bit clser to Flagstaff in years past. One thing about lion hunting in Arizona you will never run low on beautiful landscapes to enjoy.

Thanks for the reply Mike, I enjoy checking out new areas and the unique challenges each area has. Here in Michigan, bobcat hunting means cedar swamps and balsam thickets, some of which are so thick you can hardly walk through them.
Several years ago, hunting in the east end of the UP, I had a cat race going in some real thick stuff with blow downs, etc. The trees and brush were so thick that I could walk on top of the large blowdown areas in my snowshoes. I saw the cat and dogs 2 different times run underneath me. These kind of conditions can make even the best dog look like an idiot!
I imagine the cliffs and rocks in the Southwest can do the same thing .

Hey Duster, I'm originally from the Traverse City area. You ought to take a cat dog or two with you!

Small world liontracker! Did you do any bear hunting in MI? We may know some of the same people. I know some guys from Kalkaska, TC, Central Lake, Cadillac, etc.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to take any dogs with me because of time constraints (to much drive time). However, next summer we plan on hauling the camper west for a couple of weeks and visiting CO and MT.

No, that was prior to my hound days. Howard Hale over in Alpena has some of my Cameron pups though.
