HARRIS TOWNSHIP -- A man shot a hunting dog that wandered onto his property last week, according to an Ottawa County Sheriff's Office report.
Martin H. Meinke, who lives in the 16000 block of West Ohio 105, told a deputy he heard his dog barking outside before he retrieved a .22 rifle and turned floodlights on the night of Nov. 11, the report says. Meinke told an investigator there have been coyotes frequenting the area, according to the report.
After Meinke shot the dog, which died a short time later, the man hunting with the dog arrived, telling deputies he had tracked the dog via GPS after realizing the dog left the property where they were hunting, the report says.
The dog's owner, John Biggert, Graytown, told deputies the dog, Nighty Nite Little Red Ike, was 2 years old and had qualified for the National Coon Hunting Trials this year, according to the report.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time, a spokesman for the sheriff's office said, though a report has been forwarded to the Ottawa County Dog Warden who will consider the matter.
