Mostly this is a color thing. there was a group at one time that started a line of dogs they callled the american saddleback Hound. These were eccentially a family bred up line using redbone, and black and tan crosses. True redbone is the only color that is dominant over the black and tan color in hounds. you will however get some saddle back from these crosses, and by breeding them up trial and error get a group of hound that display a lot of this color. To me just another bad way of coming up with a line of dogs based on color first rather than true superior hunting characteristics. I have had and still have some high tan hounds that are a cross of old line treeing walker and bloodhound tree hound crosses. I certainly don't choose them based on this color, but it does happen in some crosses. I have had walker spotted, english bluetick and hightans from the same crosses.

there are a few walker dogs that come out with very little white, tan legs and a black blanket back. People call that a high tan, but it doesn't generally reproduce true--just an occasional color possibility for walker.

Cooter,

WE have a breeder on Oregon Ted Craddock that has alot of Hi-tans. They have been breed for years. The litters come out with Hi-Tans, Walkers, English and red dogs. Kind of nice you get what you want out of every litter...

What exactly makes them that color? I have 2 dogs that are hi-tan. My female her mother is a pure redtick and her dad is a hi-tan unknown breeding, and my male his mother is a pure plott and his dad is unknown, person hunted her when she was in heat, but i know the only dogs that were hunted with her, were walkers and her son, which was a 1/2 walker and 1/2 plott. In my females litter there were 7 pups including her, the colors were bluetick(2), redtick(2), hi-tan(2), and a red colored one. In my males litter there were i think 9 and all were either Hi-tan with a white chest, Hi-tan with brindle trim, and one that is my younger sister dog and he is brindle with a chocholate saddle and brindle trim with white boots, chest and tiped tail that curls.

Here is Dakota my female.

Here is Hemi my male.

Hes not all mixed up that much. His mom is a plott and he has 7 possible dads. all are walkers, execpt his brother from the litter before him, he is walker/plott. As far as dakota goes, her mom is a redtick and her dad is unknow on breed.

She looks just like that dog exept has a little bigger white patch on the chest. And i dont know how big your dog is but mine is only about 50 pounds. I got her from some guy shane or something in oakdale area. I have learned alot in the last year about this hound game from the really good guys on here and Butch Griffin back at home. I probably should have got a more proven bloodline so i had the two females that i got from the guy fixed. But i have worked with them alot since they were just babies and both dogs are raring to go!!! I have two papered walker females aslo but i really need to run my dogs with some good bear dogs...
