hounds doing great he's been getting on the trail and running it hard he's treeing but the time I catch-up he comes strolling back wagging his tail so I don't know what it was he treed.... he's been running in some real steep mountinous country and I just can't keep up in the thin air an all. How do I get him to wait till I get there. Im gonna run him in a little flatter land so I can make it to the tree. He's kicking my ass in the high country...

I had that problem with my older female when she was a younger dog. When she came to me I gave her NO prase at all. Tolled her to get back to the tree. A few times I gave her a swift boot in the Back side . After about a month of that she started to stay treed, but then on the other hand I have a friend that has a dog that will tee for about 5 min. stop and come back. Been that way for years and can not stop it. Just like your dog great strike/track dog will just not stay at a tree

The good: He gets on a trail like a demon possessed nose to the ground running very hard then starts the howling and trees. Hes like unconscious goes into a trance at that time. Takes off like a rocket...

The bad: He won't wait at the tree. I would say 3 to 5 minutes at most. I have to find a way maybe place a stuffed toy in a tree and make him sit there for like 30 minutes.... Either that or I loss 50 pounds and run on the tread mill for 50 minute a day with a rifle and pack over my shoulder and train to keep up.... and that anit gonna happen........

The ugly: This hunting has been in some steep country so no ATV or mules here... he has to learn to sit at that tree or he will never close the deal.

His up side is huge I think being he turns nine months today...I hope

Bluegirl is right I wouldnt say a word to the dog just keep walkin right past it. My female likes to do the same thing. I started leashing her back at the tree when I would kill game out. Dont let her get in on the chewing with the other dogs. Some old hunter said that it had worked for him. Seems to help a little bit. Good luck.

I would be happy at nine months that he is trailing and treeing at all. Nine months is still pretty young. I agree with each of the tips mentioned in prior posts except for scolding the dog. He is probably coming back to find you to say "Look what I just caught!" just like an excited little kid would. I wouldn't praise him until he leaves the tree but at nine months I wouldn't scold him ethier. If you can hunt him with some stay put tree dogs it would help too.

I had the same deal with my top dog would tree until i got there and then would take off hunting to see what else he could put up. I put on a shock collar on him and as soon as he started to sneek off I full shocked him. It only took 2 more times of this now when we get to the tree he stays treed or comes and sits at my feet. I like the boot in the ass also. Good luck

Borrow a good tree dog and hunt your young pup with it. A good example can do wonders.
