I wouldn't care if my dog was hugging the tree, sitting back, circling, or just sitting there down right bawling. Aslong as there's game in the tree that I'm hunting for.

But me I prefer hugging the tree.

We can hunt lion, bobcats, and coons...all three escape artists..I want the dogs to be aware of any movement that may change the dynamic of the hunt.We have a very agressive wood dog which is fine except he gets into more trouble ( climbing) than I would like. I also like dogs that sit back 2-3 feet and tree when we are hunting with people and dogs we don't know well...Less chance of a fight if the dogs are not piled together on the tree.

I prefer a dog that locates quick and either looks at the critter or fixes his gaze on the area where the locate scent is coming from and set down and bark steady. I know we seldom get what we want and we all want the fur to be there, but a dog like this will not get into fights even with strange dogs, will not be as l;ikely to have an animal quit the tree while they are goggle eyed hugging the woods like a pole dancer and they don't wear themselves out so fast so if they have to stay four or five hours till you get there they keep up the steady barking.
You just don't know what is going to happen at a tree. We had part of the dogs lock up a couple of hours ago and we strolled in knowing they had a lion. Well when we got there some of them still thought they did and were even trying to climb the rather short stunted juniper. The lion had bailed well some went on after it and it took us a bit to convince some of them that there was nothing left in that tree. That wasn't too bad because we were fairly close but if we had walked several miles to the bottom of a dark canyon to find them on a slick just rip tearing belly hugging and wall eyed we would have been distraught I think would be the word. LOL!

Well said Mike......those quick, slick, tree grabbers too often have empty trees and are possessive of the blanks. Give me one that checks first then sits away from the tree and looks and barks. Such problems do not happen as often with biggame as with coon and cat, but I have seen it even on bear.

That is exactly why I like the sitback style, it takes a lot smarter of critter to tree a dog that sits back at the tree and keeps an eye on the animal. I hate tree hugging dogs and would almost cull one on the spot for climbing, that is one injury a dog could avoid is falling out of the tree.
