Looking for opinions on House bred walkers as big game dogs. Anyone have experience with them?

i have a son of houses lipper. he does really well on cats

The Joe House strain of Treeing Walker has excelled at all facets of the tree dog game. Joe bred for drive and style and his many trophys prove he was an excellent breeder. As in all dogs the crosses must be analized and chosen with performance at the front and ruthless culling for that end. Just cuz they have House in front of them and even back 3 generatiosn doesn't mean they are going to do the job if you don't go your's. That means proper breeding and selection, proper conditioning and training.
This stuff doesn't just happen and fall out of the sky. Occasionaly luck smiles on a person but for any kind of consistancy in the matter it takes a plan. But the blood is there behind these great dogs. Size, style, mouth and tree, and those properly bred had great noses, grit, and speed.

One of my first hound was out of House's Bawlie and he could run a deer better than just about any dog I ever saw. But when I got him bent he was death on cats. Leader was his name.

Thanks Mike, I have read your posts and heard about you and your dogs, I certainly respect and appreciate your reply. I had a dog years ago that was a grandson to houses lipper and he was a top notch bear dog, I am still hunting a son of his that is 10 years old and still cold trailing and running bears. But that is the only experiance I have had with this breeding, and was not to familier with the history. I know how important culling and working is with any breed. Thank you again for the info .

This aint intended to start any but the Walker dogs is hard to beat and the House line was a good one. I dont think a guy can go wrong with a good line of Walker dogs. Very very competitive people keep this breed and that sure does help. I believe overall probably the most competitive folks in the world keep this breed of dogs but with that being said their are awful competitive folks in all breeds and lines.

LET ME JUST SAY THAT I HUNTED THOSE DOGS MANY YEARS BACK. THOSE WERE THE DOGS THAT MADE ME QUIT HUNTING PLOTTS. I STILL PREFER PLOTTS FOR BEAR DOGS.BEING BANNED SINCE 1994. I DON'T NEED A BEAR DOG ANY WAY. BUT THE ALL AROUND COMBINATION DOGS ,THE WALKERS SMOKE THE OTHERS. I DON'T FEED ALOT OF HOUNDS. SO I LIKE A WELL ROUNDED DOG. ONE THAN CAN TREE A BOBCAT AS WELL AS BAY A GOOD LICK ON A MEAN BEAR. COMPARED TO MY LATEST VENTURE OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS BREEDING AND TRAINING THE WHITE CLOUD DOGS. I WILL SAY THAT THE HOUSE STRAIN IS /WAS MUCH BETTER DOGS. I KNOW MY CULL RATE IS WAY UP TODAY. BUT I ATTRIBUTE THIS TO WHO HAS HAD THE DOGS. WHO HAS BRED THEM AND FOR WHAT PURPOSE. MY LATEST LINE WAS PROMOTED MAINLY BY ONE MAN WHO PUT A DOLLAR BILL AHEAD OF QUALITY. AND I'M SURE THERE ARE PLENTY GUYS OUT THERE PROMOTING THE HOUSE LINE IN THE SAME FASHION. IF I WERE TO HUNT THE HOUSE LINE AGAIN MY GUESS IS I WOULD BE CULLING THE HELL OUT OF THEM AS WELL.REMEMBER THE WALKERS OUT NUMBER ALL OTHER BREEDS BY A GOOD MARGIN.YOU ARE BOUND TO HAVE MORE CULLS.THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. AND LIKE MANY OTHERS. I'M NOT INTERESTED IN ARGUING ABOUT HOUNDS AND BREEDS.

Our current stud dog is out of a quadruple Lipper bred female.As Mike L said alot of the House bred dogs(not just Lipper) have a huge amount of drive and heart.But they can also as my friends and I like to joke around turn out to be "Lipper idiots".As Mike M said just can't be afraid to cull and be willing to admit if something doesn't work.I personally love the drive and heart the House blood adds.I would way rather have to back one down than to have to beg one to come on.Two of my first walkers were direct sons of Houses Bawlie man those were some good old days!Nobody else mentioned it but I will HUGE MOUTHS!!!!!!

It's nice to see you guys still appreciate the Joe House line of dogs. I've bought pups off of a lot of so called "stud dogs" that never amounted to sh*t. Again years ago I went back to House's breeding and it's still the best out there. I attend a few UKC and PKC hunts and see a lot of Sackett, Nailor and what have you, but the best by far is House's dogs. So many off the dogs these days are tree happy idiots, no tracking ability or drive to them, just pull up on the first tree and make it sound good. One thing I will say about House bred dogs is they can have a little hard headed streak to them, but as Mike Leonard said, once you break them of that you have an exceptional hound on your hands.

Well in my opinion the Nailor dogs are extremely fast track dogs but they are also extremely hot nosed dogs with very little desire to finish a track if there is a snag and will get hooked when this happens. I aint sayin just the pups straight out of him either but even on down the line, its hard to get rid of that gene for some reason but they are great treedogs and hold pressure better than any line if you ask me and they make up their mind rather quickly which of course is good but mostly bad.

As far as Sackett bred dogs, well Jr. anyhow, I blame them dogs lack of trackin ability on Jrs dam side cause my old man drew Sackett one night and the sumbitch ran a fox for a couple hours so I would say he was willing to at least run a track. LOL!

Very well said. Yes, there are culls in every strain of Walkers and every breed for that matter.
