running a track

Here is a classic model we see in our area, What would you expect out of your dogs? Temp mid 20's at night and 40-45 during the day. How long would you expect track to hold scent for your dogs to move it out. Some snow some bare ground?

In my opinion it would depend on how much dry ground. A good dog will skip thrue the dry patches and jump forward to the snow. If you have an entire south slope that is bare then maybe a day and a half for my dogs. if there is snow and the track ends in the snow it could be several days old if the dogs can jump from snow pile to snow pile. makeing big sweeping motions. MY dogs are not true dry ground dogs either. I would bet those guys in the south west can run a much older track than I can.

do you think that the snow melting off that fast will cut down on scent also.

If it is turning that track hollow then it is definately washing away the scent. You see those bobcat tracks all the time walking down the black top and all you can see is a hole in the snow and the dogs will move them fine. that could be a visual thing. I only know how my dogs act since i rarely hunt with other people.
