Yes, although it is very rare, cougars can be black, white, and even a bluish grey colour. There was a black puma caught in Central America many years back I have a photo of it in a book. My buddy here caught a white one back in 2001.

Could you please scan a picture of that black puma? When you say puma do you mean mnt lion or jaguar?
Any pictures of black cougars would be apreciated.

A friend of mine has seen a big black tom twice and a black and tan female once while he was looking for cows. A few people have tried running him and have always lost a few dogs. those dog killers you have to track until the jump and then let the dogs go.As you let the dogs go let a shot go at the same time it seems to change the attitide of the lion.

Here is the pic of the black one from my book. Sorry I cannot post the pic of the white one my buddy treed as the person who harvested it does not want the photo of it on the net. A few people on this board have seen the photo of it that I have shown them in person.

I have heard of dozens of sightings of black lions. I have yet to know of anyone who has actually treed one that had a camera. Kinda makes one wonder huh? I did mount a cat that had a coal black throat and chin clean to it's lower lipline. Wade Lemon caught it. I also mounted the white one mentioned earlier. It is believed melinism in Puma Concoulor ocurrs more frequently in the southern hemisphere.
When I hear a story about a black cougar, I just smile and nod. You never know.

Texas Parks and Wildlife say there has never been one captured or photographed.

i have heard of a couple black lions up here in n idaho but they also were seen in areas that had recently been clearcut and burned so dont know if they had got the ash on there coat or not. a freind swears he seen a chocolate lion last year elk hunting but we tried to run but never found a dark one just regular colored ones in that area. would love to see one and as many people say they have seen them im sure they are out there.

I do not believe they exist. A lot of people say they've seen one but what they've probably seen is a lion in the shadows that my have appeared dark. Have you ever heard of someone telling you they just saw a lion and it was small! Never. Every lion ever seen by anyone is a 200 lb. monster.

I am with most of you guys 100%. Every once a year deer hunter I talk to has seen a mountain lion in Maine or NH.Every bear thats in someones backyard weighs 500lbs.
BUT
Check this out and see what you think ? I cant figure it out .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhUE58vV2WsHey Pete, theres about as much chance of that being a black snowshoe as there is the United States having a black president !
