I currently live in Oregon but am considering moving to Wyoming in the next few years. I was wondering if any of you guys could be any help with where I could get into some good hunting on cats and coons. I recently spent some time in Cody and loved it there. Deer and Elk hunting is another big concern of mine. Idealy I would want to live in an area that has good hunting for all four animals. So could anyone give me some types of where in Wyoming would be suitable? I'm not trying to stop on anyone's toes as for hunting areas or anything just getting tired of the hunting situtations in Oregon. Thanks for any help. Also what are the hunting seasons like there for cats and coons? Thanks a ton.

Well, I can tell you this. Wyoming is very diverse in it's landscape and you can pretty much find decent hunting of all game in any given area. You should not base your move just on where the wildlife is as you can easily travel to anyplace in a few hours. Wyoming can be very harsh in the winter and some of the more remote places are not accessable this time of year. You should take in account the not only the weather, but what you can afford. There are some great areas to live, but they are on the higher end of the cost of living. Jackson, Cody, Sheridan, are just a few of the more affluent places that are nice to live but you will pay to live there. If you go to the central and southern parts of the state, Riverton, Rawlings, Lander, you can usually find the cost of living more affrodable. Also unless you are planning on retiring here you would have to find work. The best places for that would be Gillette and Casper. I hope that helps out a bit. Take it from a West Coast girl myself. There is no better place to live than Wyoming.
As far as stepping on other people's toes, well public land is just that "public" and if they have an issue with you being there tell them to "bugger off!!!"

Well, let me add my "two cents worth". Having lived in Wyoming and operated ranches all over the State for ten years, I have ridden mule back or horse back over a great deal of it! And, hunted all over it also!
All of the folks who has commented to date seem to be pretty well"right on" in their comments. Weather is probabley the worst factor/problem you encounter. From now and in the near future, the Northern part will likely experience some Wolf problems. Haven't heard of any as of yet, but they are expanding out from Yellowstone. Friends have seen them and their sign as far SE as Muddy Gap area.
I've had the good fortune to have hunted in number of the Western Stated and for cat, I prefer NM & AZ. Due to climate(I hate snow) and their seasons.
In Wyoming, just for example, I contracted to do project in Arlington, WY and my thinking was that I would bring my hounds and equipement with me for Fall and Winter and get in some cat hunting? Wrong!! Mainly a wind problem. And, area has had a mild winter so far, with min. amt. of snow. But still the wind has blown every day since middle of November! Treed one lion in hole under rock in the Shirleys and that really has been my luck. Oh, ran a few, saw their tracks, but wind was blowing so hard you could not stand up!
Well that is my two cents worth!

I hope you really like hunting coons and cats because if it can't climb a tree the wolves around the cody area eat it. In a few years we might not be able to hunt elk, deer and moose around cody. The wolf is just a tool to get the hunters out of the woods.

Hipshooter: What states would fall under what you said. I didnt even know there was a state that allowed you to harvest or even persue cats year around, or coons for that matter either. Also what states have a high population of states like you said?
