I just bought the garmin 220 and want to get the detailed maps for my area, my question is there different products out there and if so is one better than the other? Any help would be appreciated.

You need the Garmin Mapsource CDs. It's a three CD set with the western us, eastern us and Alaska and Hawaii on the last CD. If you can find someone that has it and can borrow it, you can download it onto your harddrive and it works fine. If you use the typical download, you'll need the CDs everytime you want to use it. But there is a way to download all the info off the CD's to your computer and not need the CDs again. I just went through all this. Great info and detail plus after a race, you can download all the tracks and see where all you dogs went. You'll be surprised at all the info you can gather using your new GPS.

Thanks, I have seen the sd cards advertised for different regions for about $60.00 and you just install the sd card in the GPS. Is this not a good way to go?

Maybe the SD card is the way to go. But for less then $60 you can get the mapsource CD of all 50 states. I have a 4mb card in my Garmin and have all of Alaska and all of the western US downloaded on it.

I have the sd card and you just place it in the back and you are race ready! Very simple. Make sure you get the right card. Look on the garmin website, and it will tell you what card for what States. Just because it says Western States on the package doesn't mean it's all Western States. The garmin website will explain each sd chip to you. Good luck!

does anybody know if Maptech terrain navigator topo maps could be downloadeded in garmin astro 220. I think that would be the hot set up.maps have cords for routs and shows and names all creeks mountains and roads and can be seen in seamless veiw so you dont need 4 maps to see 1 sq mile.

coaldog, the mapsourse cds have the same info and are also seamless. not sure if you could download them or not. Call Garmin, they have a phone number and the two times I've called, they were very knowlegable and helpful.

Thanks FullCry i will give garmin a call with this new technolgy old johnson collars and boot leather we will be able to get dogs back in one day instead of three on these athletic bears we run.

I bought the Garmin TopoUS map that has all of the states on one CD. I went and downloaded the one for Montana from miscjunk.org and am much more impressed with it than the one from Garmin. There is a lot more detail and the topo lines are in 40' intervols instead of 150'. plus it was free!

do you need to format the misc junk maps to put them on your garmin.

The map downloaded to the garmin program on my computer and was just another map choice to load on to the GPS. I believe that it is formatted to be compatable upon download, but you need to already have MapSource on your PC. That's how it worked for me anyways.
