I was wondering around what age does everyone start breaking their dogs (given the fact that these dogs have been on enough good game) and if some poor the electricity on around a certain age.
For instance I put shock collars on my dogs all the time, but I don’t pour the electricity on them by a certain age ever… I just slowly break them from when their young dogs, but never fry their heads off, because i'm afraid of taking the hunt out of them.

I think that it is just fitting the need to the situation. I have had a dog that died of old age, wore a collar every hunt of his life, and never got the electricity. I currently have a 6 year old dog that gets juiced at least once a year, and I mean all the way up on high. He is a good dog when he is focused, but he needs refocusing every so often.
All dogs are different, some you can take the hunt out of by speaking roughly to them, some you can't take the hunt out of short of killing them. No one rule will apply to them all.
good luck

yup

-- if they get real trashy-----dont worry bout hurting their feelings-
ive had super luck--- put pups on older but runnable tracks , just bumping them with the collar-
shock them lightly when they arent super excited ,rather than the big burn method-
fresh tracks in snow -- or on a dirt road after a rain-
i usually just do this occasionaly when i get a chance while hunting-
if i can see tracks and know dog can smell them ,thats perfect for training
best deal is if you can do a little trash breaking and get rite back on good game -
i think that several times spreadout over a period of time works better than frying them one time when they are running full bore-

I've never had too much trouble running a young dog with the older dogs off a track, as the young dog usually gets in on the hunt and stays put with the pack. It's the rigging and running blind without a track that will land a young dog in trouble, especially if a guy has dogs that will rig old lion or bear tracks because there is about always fresh trash on the way to that track.
The beeper on my unit will usually turn the head on most any of my dogs and let them know I want something. However, if I get a young dog that pulls off the pack running trash that I can see that dog is in trouble. And that dog gets a pretty damn good jolt! I'm not talking a six month old pup or a yearling, I'm talking about a two year old that has had plenty of the good stuff. And that's where dogs seem to get trashy to me, that is when they start to mature and become independant of the pack.........if I get them past that point and back into the pack the dog usually makes it.
