my mentor, an ol trapper... always picked up stray dogs and made em into deer/varmit dogs...said they respect you and a dog has to respect you to hunt for you.
This ol guy was a legend though and i miss that guy

I used to have a Rottwieller that would hunt Grouse and rabbits. She would chase the rabbits although not quite like a beagle and would start to get "birdy", so I knew she when was about to flush a grouse. I shot quite a few critters in front of her.
She was also my trapline dog. If I was checking my sets before daylight I could always tell long before I got to the set if I had something caught just by watching her and she would trail up the animals on a drag. The only problem was she wanted to kill everything I caught so I had to stay pretty close to her.
Not a Hienz 57 but not quite a hunting dog either

Other then my black and tan all I hunt at this point is Mutts.
This is Buffy 1/2 border collie 1/4 gloden lab and 1/4 german shepard, she was on her first cougar at 7 months and grabbed a chunk of tail as the young tom jumped the tree. Awesome dog after the jump, but does not have to much desire to run a cold track , but likes a good bayup with bears or cats. Also dam of the next 2 pups.

Burger is from Buffy, sired by my bl&tan. Was on his first lion hunt at 7 months and went from start to finish and even pulled a little hair when the tom hit the ground. I spent last monday recovering Burger after a Sunday lion hunt, He stayed at the trees 20 hrs not bad for 10 months old.

this Cookie also from Buffy, Does not have quite the staying power as her brother Burger but stays hard on the wood and has a dislike for cats. A real easy handling dog.

chilcotin hillbilly ---- thats pretty neat how do the half hounds hold up on a track around here they would laugh me out of the woods dragging a dog that wasnt full hound or cur out but I think its pretty dang neat did they get the houndy mouth

Thanks guys

Ya, Tony those pups of mine are really an experiment as the dam is a great family dog and is faster then any hound I have hunted with and loves hunting bears and cats. I thought what the heck, breed her to my cat hating cold tracking bl&tan and these pups could be some easy handling cat catchers. So far so good, its nice not to have to leash up after a tree and I have yet to use an s-collar on either pup. MInd you I don`t have the kind of peer pressure you boys have states side I am the only one within and hour and a half drive that runs bears and cats so peer pressure is not a problem. :D I don`t expect either dog to be really cold nosed and they don`t need to be as if you turn out on to many cold track around here the wolves will surely get you dogs, as I learned the hard way.

That is pretty darn neat using that cross hope they keep working out good for you ya the guys i hunt with are pretty much die hard competition hunt guys if it aint a walker or a english dog with a 5 mile pedigree they aint hunting it they think i am nuts for getting out of that style dog but myself I am sick of all that junk I just want to hunt they can have all thier night champions and grand nights I am thinking about leaning towards a couple of the big houndy blueticks or black and tans and maybe a plott or 2 I am going to run them on bear and coon both tried to get into some bobcat hunting last year and had a redtick and a redbone both gyps neither registered that would burn ones tail up and would put him up but couldnt keep them in a tree around here they jump almost 100% of the time last one i ran with them we ran for miles for probably 13 hours and it jumped probably 30 times
