Trail Mouth which do you like ? Bawl mouth or chop mouth?

We could do a poll on this but I would rather hear comments on which and why.
I will admit I love a big bawl mouthed trail dog and nothing is much more stirring to me that when an old canyon just roars when old Blue shakes they acorns loose and tells everybody he has found Mr. Lion.
But then on the other hand I have had dogs that were straight chop or semit bawl and chop depending on the age or status of the track and boy when they shift gears it can really send you heart up into you throat.
So tell me what you like and why.

Good topic Mike! I like and hunt both the bawl and chop mouthed dogs, and it helps me understand who is doing what I think. The bawl mouthed dogs aren't ever gonna win a treeing contest, but the ones I have hold up better if they get stuck under a tree than the choppers (my choppers) do. There have been times when I just couldn't make it to the tree (or they didn't tree) until the second day on the track, and after twenty-four to thirty-six hours some of my chop mouth dogs are hoarse while the bawl mouth dags are usually in better shape vocally. That Ike dog is one of the few exceptions to the fast and hard chop rule in my pack, as I've never, ever seen him loose his voice........

Mike I have a 16 month old bluetic/redtic pup that is proving to be the best dog I have owned yet for her age. She has a huge bawl on her. infact her bawl is so big and long you would think she couldn't move the track. however she does move a trac with incredible speed and acuracy. I have a 9 year old walker female that is my #1 bear rig dog. she has a super fast chop mouth on her and you always know where she is and where she is headed but there is no real music to it. So for me it is the earth shaking bawl that realy is music to my ears. Ike, my dogs seem to be the same my chop dogs are generaly horse os silent if they are left out over night while my bawl dogs are still going strong.

Something about a bawl mouth dog off down in a canyon has always really got to me. I've always had a mix, some bawl some chop. Pretty good harmony but I do like the bawl best.
A buddy loned me a big dog from aways up in BC a couple winters ago.
First track I heard him open on I started looking for a tree to climb. He dosn't have a bawl, more like a very loud wavering moan. Spooky

I have chop mouth dogs and i dont have anything against them. Those hundred barks a minute are ok if your trying to win a treeing contest. What realy gets my attention is a big booming bawl mouth. I like a bawl mouth that will shake the leaves off the fall tree's. Nothing quite like it. I would have to say that ol Hagar dog just about fits the picture!

I've gotta go with a big ol bawl mouth. I do however agree wiht Ike that a mix is easy to tell whats going on. However that big roar of those bawl mouth hounds gets me going and takes me back in time a hundred years. Thats what I live to hear and never get tired or it.

I love a bawl mouth. Me and my dad were deer hunting and a bunch of guys drove past rigging their dogs, and they went around the bend and they all simultaneously opened up. We could hear their entire run, that was a defining moment in my short huntin career so far. I'd been hounding my dad about getting dogs (complete pun intended) and he just said wow that was really cool, looks like we're gonna have to get so damn dogs. haha so thats y I like the bawl mouth.

Nothing like a good pack of rig dogs to stir the heart and get that adrenaline going when a guy hears them blowup on scent!

Robin,
You talked about a spookey quivering bawl.
The best mouth bar none I have ever heard on a dog was my first great hound who was a Registered bluetick I called Earl.
Earl was not a big dog maybe 65 pounds had good ears and was Vaughn and Ark Valley Blue breeding. Oh My! What a voice!
When he struck this long quivering wavering bawl would just seem to make the night air just come alive. I would find myself actually holding my breath listening. As he moved the track it was like a freight train ballin the jack thru the night in the distance. When he hit the tree that quiver would drag out so long into dying locate bawl, and the Yow! Yow! Yow! that hard jack hammer deep chop would slam the timber. You didn't have to hurry and you didn't have to worry becasue the fur would be there.
My eyes still get misty thinking about that voice I truely think it was that alone that stole my heart forever as a hound lover.

I have to vote for the bawl mouth too. Like Mike, my first true hound had one of those bawls that woke up the night. He is the reason I fell in love with hound hunting. I do have some chop mouth hounds now, but I find it harder to gage the age of the track with them. They seem to run hot and cold tracks alike....Wide open. Every time the foot hits the ground their mouth comes open! JMO.

I like a bawl mouth on a cold/working track. Then progressivly shorter bawls as the track gets hotter, then strait hard chop on the tree.
.............sure wish I had a dog with a mouth like this in my pack

High clear or yodling chop given as little as possible for me. Mouth means so very little to me. As long as they are loud and it carries when and if they do bark, I could care less.

I would have to say Bawl mouth on track, My first hound was a little Bluetick female, trueboy breeding that had the most awesome bugal bawl mouth I have ever heard, man did her bawl mouth ever cut the wind.
