A fun day on the Mtn.

I've been busy excavating for the last few weeks and haven't had time to do much hunting. Thursday night the phone rings and its a out of State guy who had drawn a tag in a unit that I have always liked to hunt. I guess he'd been out here 3-4 times hunting with different people throughout the winter and although he had seen a few cats...none of them were what he was looking for. I proceed to tell him that there was no way that I could go, and that I had to do a backhoe job Friday. He asked if I knew anyone that could take him. I told him I'd check around. I called and left messages, but couldn't get ahold of anyone. I told him that I could take him next week sometime, but he said that he was probably just going to go home. Well I kind of get feeling bad for the guy so I called him back and told him we would go, and that I would do the backhoe job next week. Well Friday morning at 5:00 am I wake up to several inches of snow? Can you believe that...with no wind either. Well me and a friend meet him in Duchesne and we plan our day. My buddy went with Laron (the guy with the tag) looking in one area while I head to another. They call me around 9:00 and tell me they found a small track that was pretty fresh, but found a bigger track with quite a bit of snow in it. I looked at the track....told them I couldn't really tell how big it was, but we could find out. Turned loose, and caught a big female. Laron was pretty excited and said it was the biggest lion he'd seen and kept asking if I was sure it was a female. I laughed said yea and said: lets go huntin. We hit a couple more roads and found a nice track. Turned loose about 2:00 pm and the dogs got to their second tree. I noticed right off that this tom kitty was missing one ear....not just a little bit, but the whole dang thing. I told Laron, and he just said "man that adds character" I just laughed and said ok. Laron made a super shot with his bow...the lion died quick.....took some pictures, skinned the kitty and headed out. Laron found his arrow in the trail about 100 yards below the tree so he was pretty excited about that too. It was to easy really....no cold trailing...no tough conditions (oh wait.....my mutts did trail through a herd of about 50 elk and had them running everywhere, but somehow managed to concentrate long enough to get through them without a wreck :D ) it ended well for a pack of outta shape pups and a hunter who thought that he was going to have to eat his tag.

Thanks guys. To be honest I hated to see the cat get harvested :(
I'm just a sucker for a person with a sob story.
I've got a Daughter that I want to get a lion for. My son shot one 4-5 years ago, and I sometimes take a buddy. I have guided some, but would rather not....just do it to help support the habit :)
But you are right....it was a good day...to be honest I had to do some grubbing but actually found 4 different tracks yesterday....reminded me of the good ol days. PM me your e-mail addy and if I get some good pics I'll send ya one of ol one ear

Actually my walkers are out of Jeff Allens dogs. I'm not good at this computer crap so I don't do pics to good
These dogs I have from Jeff have always been pretty natural....put em on the right game and they catch it so I can't take to much credit for that. The credit has to go to him and those involved in the breeding. The only credit I'll take is turning them loose and maybe a little credit for teaching them their name
