Any of you blokes that have a peek on the Aussie web sites, the hound season begins this week end. Sit back and enjoy. The season is open until december. I am sure there will be a few good hunting pics put up online to keep the interest up.
Happy hunting.
Release the hounds!!!

the two that I look at are
www.ozdeer.comwww.deerhunter.com.auThe bloke who started ozdeer used to hunt with me for 10 years. He is trying to get his own team up and running. He is breeding bloodhounds and runs a pretty good site.
deerhunter is the website of the VHH (Victorian hound hunters). This organisation has probably got the most experienced and knowledgeable hound hunters in the country.
Come down for a look in the land down under. Like HH everywhere in the world. We are passionate about hunting and love our hounds

Just a small correction there Sambarhound. deerhunter.com.au is not the official VHH site. It is just the forums attached to that site.

Brings back some memories............and some agro. Have you ever had to shoot your pack of hounds because someone sitting in a govt office thought it was a good idea to ban the use of the type of hound you use??? All the blood sweat n tears that went into getting a good pack of hounds up n running. The thousands of manhours.......ah shit happens. Just hope it never happens to somene else.

That is what happened to 90% of hound hunters that were hunting sambar with hounds in Victoria Australia. Only a small percentage of crews were using beagles or bloodhounds. The majority were using foxhounds and their crosses. Some guys kept the hounds if they had the room to live out their lives on the end of a chain or in a pen. Some could find homes for a few and a few went to Tasmania(another state ) to wallaby hunters but for the most it was a very sad end. I don't know what is more sad. Watching a foxhound in the prime of his life sitting looking at you while you load the beagles/bloodhounds into the crate or putting him down..........worse happens in the world but that really sucked.
On the bright side we were lucky enough to have bought a beagle of unknown hunting ability and unknown lineage who has turned out to be a champion. Maybe the gods were smiling on us or feeling sorry for us. We got him as a pup and he was hunting with the foxhounds for 2/3 seasons before we had to stop using them. I am sure they taught him the ropes. After the foxhounds were banned the beagle started getting more attention from the hunters and consequently more deer shot off him. We were working harder as hunters to find the freshest starts to give the young hounds the best chance of getting close to the deer. We were also improving as hunters, learning the country we were hunting better and shooting more deer. The best way to train your hounds to be species selective is to shoot the animal you started the hound on. Pretty simple but not always as easy as it seems.
On a brighter note the first litter out of our good beagle begin their 4th season today. By the end of last season one of them was looking as if he was a chip off the old block. He will probably over take the old man this season. The changing of the guard.
As one very experienced hound hunter once said to me after the ban of the fox hounds " half the fun in this caper is getting there" meaning that most of the challenges and satisfactions come from getting a good pack of hounds up and going and then working to get bloodlines that are predictable. He is right.

And I thought they were pulling some bad stuff over here. I think its time all houndsmen pool our money and just buy a country. Run it as we see fit, load it with game and tell the anti's to piss off if they come over they will be hung.
I think we can get Iceland cheap right now.

Hahaha. How much to buy it? Sounds like a good idea.
I was back in Australia for a month or so and got a fair bit of hunting in. That pup I was talking about is the real deal. We shot a 30 inch sambar stag of him the last hunt I was there. He was flying!!! Two weeks later he was dead. Couldnt fuc$ing believe it. Tragic accident. So much time and effort down the shitter and as the old saying goes " you only lose the good ones" Still sit here shaking my head when I think about it. He was one of those hounds that you just cant wait to pull out of the crate as you know he is going to do the job for you.
The 2009 season is just about over. It finishes beginning of december but the weather is warming up and the snakes are out and about.
