WAYNE COUNTY- The recent claim of a mountain lion with two cubs seen in
Scott Township comes on the paws of two other reports of purported
panthers.
As was reported July 21st, Karen Baldwin called this newspaper claiming
to have seen what she described as a mountain lion crossing Elk Lake
Drive, Clinton Township in front of her car, July 20th.
Since then, another report arrived, from Shirley Stein of Torrey, north
of Honesdale. She stated that in late June, at 5:15 a.m. she heard a
"horrifying sound" and observed a fox cub running away. She said
she and her husband then "saw a large animal leap in two strides
for about 100 feet. We lost sight of him we thought he had jumped the
rock wall and ran into the woods" Looking from off her deck with
binoculars, she stated she saw, "what I believe to be a mountain
lion he also had catlike features and tan in color, he was larger then
my dog who weighs about 75 pounds. It definitely was not a bobcat, he
didn't have any spots and was much larger in size. I wish I had grabbed
the camera instead."
Observing the strange animal at the fox den, she says it looked right
at her, yelling to her husband and returning to her deck, she said the
animal then just ran off.
Mrs. Stein advised people to be cautious. "Remember safety first,
then someone please snap a picture," she added.
Editor's Note: While reports are welcome, The Wayne Independent does
not claim to verify whether people are correct in what they say they
have seen. The Pa. Game Commission contends most reports are likely
that of some other animal misidentified, and states mountain lions are
no longer indigenous to this state.
