I'd like to get some feed back from some of you long time breeders out there. I don't know allot about breeding dogs for the long term and line breeding and all that, I just got lucky and made a cross one time several years ago and it worked..............kind of.

Since about 1991 I had been breeding some grade walker dogs. The unique thing about this line was that very, very, very few females ever made dogs. 2 that I know of made "ok" dogs, and 1 made an above average dog. Not so for the males, most of the males made above average dogs. This is after about 6-8 differen't crosses and litters. Everybody around here wanted the females and they all got ample oppurtunity in the woods, but they were lousy.

Finally after about the 3rd or 4th litter I reconized this trait and would keep mostly males from the litters and 1 female out of every litter just hoping I might get lucky. Never happened.

In the next year or so I'm going to make another cross out of that strain to the last male that I have access to. I want to breed him to one of the Nance bred line of dogs scattered all over this website in hopes of maybe finally getting a cross that will produce females!!!!

dont know what you are compairing your dogs to i have been breeding the same line of walker dogs for about 35 yrs i judge all my pups by the old dogs if they dont run and tree with their parents at an early age i dont feed them i have made 2 out crosses one didnt impress me wont do it again the last one i havent decided on yet but if you breed tight you learn fast whats good and bad maybe you should start over find a male that does what you want then a female then breed the male to the best daughter and see what happens www.fallriverwalker.com

I know if I can find another good line of dogs to start breeding that the chances of this happening again is pretty slim. It's just that it's so tempting to make another cross because i know if I do make another cross, I'm gonna get some good dogs.... guaranteed. But they will be males.

As for judging my dogs, I am pretty hard to please actually. I'm one of those guys that has a pre-conceived notion that the dog is not going to make me happy from the get go and I wait for it to prove me wrong. I hunt it hard as soon as it is physically big enough to be turned in with the older dogs (6-8 months old) and it better get in there and get going. then it needs to stay hooked on these hard cat and fox races, if it gets slung (and they all do) then it better get back in there and try to get a piece of the front and then after being under several trees, it needs to start treeing some for sure by a year old..........by 2 years old, it needs to be treeing game on it's own, not every trip, but capable of treeing game by itself.

Now that we have the internet and sites like this one, it gives a guy allot more info on differen't lines of dogs and breeding. Didn't really have that before.

I was just curious if anyone had experienced that where a male or female was more dominant in litters. Because the females in this line of dogs sucked!
