Somone please tell me what the difference is. I have been hunting hogs all my life with catahoulas. All the catahoulas I have come across have usually been closed mouth, hard bayen, decent dogs. I have read online about them and it seems they are the same or have been mistaken for leopard curs. Is a leopard cur a different dog? When I google either "catahoula" or "leopard cur" they are sometimes listed as the same dog. The american leopard cur is discribed as a open mouth dog and some photos have it looking like some kind of kemmer cur. Ive seen some guy in other postings use their leopard curs for bear. The adverage closed mouth catahoula wouldnt make a decent bear dog. So im confused. I hunt hogs only for the most part so im kinda in the dark about the rest of the hound/open trailing style of hunting. Mabye im in the dark as to the difference between the catahoula and leopard cur as well. Mabye ill post some pics of my catahoulas

male on the left is a purebred catahoula outa camp a while. Female on the right is 1/4 catahoula 3/4 kemmer cur. She was a natural bobtail. Both good hog dogs that started my little line of hog dogs. Both are gone now but their pups have made them a desired bloodline in my neck of the woods.

no reason houlas can't be bear dogs. all things being equal, silent gritty dogs will catch more of anykind of game w/ shorter races.

American Leopard Hounds are believed to be the descendants of dogs that were brought to the new world by Spanish conquistadors and crossed with native Mexican dogs. Early American settlers brought Leopard dogs from Mexico to hunt bear.
The Leopard Cur was recognized by UKC on November 1, 1998. The breed name was changed to American Leopard Hound May 1, 2008.
The American Leopard Hound is an all-purpose tree dog, noted for stamina and the ability to withstand all extremes of temperature. This breed is noted for its extreme desire to please, which makes it an easy dog to train. They can handle a cold track and still be under the voice control of the handler. They are open trailers with a very strong desire to stay on track. They excel in their ability to hold game at bay without getting injured. Although they have been bred and used for all varieties of small game, the American Leopard Hound is also outstanding on big game such as bear and cougar.
so yes they are two diffrent breeds even though they may look the same

Only dogs registerd with the UKC are called American Leopard hounds, dogs that are only registerd with the ALCBA are still called Leopard Curs, so I guess if you have a dual registerd dog, you could call it either a hound or a Cur depending on your mood that day LOL
