registering a gascon

I love the old school blueticks and understand there is a difference between the modern blue tick and the blue gascons but where do the gascons register? UKC? None of the breed standard pages really say. I know the magestics can be registered but what about the gascons?

I know if you go to the UKC web site they do have a GRAND BLEU DE GASCOGNE listed also a GRAND GASCON-SAINTONGEOIS? dont know if this is any help. Looking at the info on there the GRAND BLEU DE GASCOGNE looks just like the gascon on here?

Thanks for the info guys . I have a large UKC bluetick female ( 70+pounds)and once she gets her title's, I would like to breed her to a gascon stud. Because I love the look and this ole fatboy cant keep up with these lightning fast competition dogs. So I guess I need to be careful about... not only is it a good breeding? but where and how is the stud registered? It will have to be UKC only. And it seems that most of the big time Gascon people are either UKC or ABGHA. thanks again. :D

If you have a regular bluetick that's in the 70 lbs range, you won't have any trouble finding someone willing to breed his big blue male to your female, especially if she's the real deal coon dog. What you will have trouble finding is a registered Gascon that isn't also a UKC registered Bluetick. Any bluetick that meets the ABGHA standard can be registered as a Gascon.

What part of the country do you live in?

I live in the N E part of Oklahoma. I was out of coonhunting for 22 years (5 kids , Little league sports and there showing livestock) upon my return I could hardly find the old style coonhounds and the competitions have become crazy fast.Im slowly working my way back into hounds. When my next door neighbor and I coonhunted years ago he had a real big bluetick male and a large walker male , even his female's were large and we rode mules and the treeing contests and water trials he took me too were much less formal. I have already decided that the old heritage hounds are what I like , and I would rather own what I like than conform to modern times . my kids call me stubborn. I know this attitude may cost me on a competition level but If im gonna own dogs i have to love em. The gascon people seem to fit my thinking pretty well. The few that still raise these great dogs are to be admired in my opinion . Im glad I found this forum you can really learn alot.

Big Country I agree with you. Its like cutting horses, they make a hound conform to a set standerd and in truth the hound they cut out can have the qualities we need for our kind of hunting. Competition dogs are coon dogs to me and yet I have seen mediocre coon hounds that were burnem up cat hounds. I also love the colder nose bawl mouth hound. one of them is never going to win chops per minute on the wood!

well on her first birthday 6-1-09 my blue weighed 74 pounds on our freight scale at work, 75 pounds at the vet. She is really long and lanky and long legged. She is already ukc registered and meets most of the requirements to be registered a gascon so who makes the final decision as to her worthiness to be registred gascon or not?. I will soon be in the market for a male to breed to and to purchase a gascon male pup of my own . She has a LOUD mouth and is constantly ready to go, she started on coons ( just a couple times ). Goes nuts on a caged coon but a buddy at work is a bobcat hunter so I my try to switch , just to have someone to go with. Never hunted bobcat, lion or bear it looks like a challenge.

B.B.BD,

Paul has been pretty busy these days and is in and out of here, so you may have to wait a while for your reply. He's a good friend of mine, so I can tell you that all of the hounds that I've seen in his pictures have been UKC registered as blueticks, but all are from Gascon/BigBlue bloodlines. Paul will have to answer whether or not any of those particular hounds are ABGHA registered.
